Urban Legends and Folklore IQ and Voter Preference in 2004 Presidential Election

Netlore Archive: In which the results of the 2004 U.S. presidential election are correlated with purported average IQ of voters in each state

Description: Net hoax Circulating since: Nov. 2004 (this version) Status: False Analysis: See below

IQ and Voter Preference State Average IQ 2004 1 Connecticut 113 Kerry 2 Massachusetts 111 Kerry 3 New Jersey 111 Kerry 4 New York 109 Kerry 5 Rhode Island 107 Kerry 6 Hawaii 106 Kerry 7 Maryland 105 Kerry 8 New Hampshire 105 Kerry 9 Illinois 104 Kerry 10 Delaware 103 Kerry 11 Minnesota 102 Kerry 12 Vermont 102 Kerry 13 Washington 102 Kerry 14 California 101 Kerry 15 Pennsylvania 101 Kerry 16 Maine 100 Kerry 17 Virginia 100 Bush 18 Wisconsin 100 Kerry 19 Colorado 99 Bush 20 Iowa 99 Bush 21 Michigan 99 Kerry 22 Nevada 99 Bush 23 Ohio 99 Bush 24 Oregon 99 Kerry 25 Alaska 98 Bush 26 Florida 98 Bush 27 Missouri 98 Bush 28 Kansas 96 Bush 29 Nebraska 95 Bush 30 Arizona 94 Bush 31 Indiana 94 Bush 32 Tennessee 94 Bush 33 North Carolina 93 Bush 34 West Virginia 93 Bush 35 Arkansas 92 Bush 36 Georgia 92 Bush 37 Kentucky 92 Bush 38 New Mexico 92 Bush 39 North Dakota 92 Bush 40 Texas 92 Bush 41 Alabama 90 Bush 42 Louisiana 90 Bush 43 Montana 90 Bush 44 Oklahoma 90 Bush 45 South Dakota 90 Bush 46 South Carolina 89 Bush 47 Wyoming 89 Bush 48 Idaho 87 Bush 49 Utah 87 Bush 50 Mississippi 85 Bush

Comments: The data charted above, which began circulating on the Internet shortly after the U.S. presidential election of 2004, would appear to confirm an elitist supposition held by some on the left — namely that Bush supporters are dumber than Kerry supporters.

There's just one problem: the numbers in the "Average IQ" column were fabricated. No such data exists.

As it happens, the same figures were bandied about earlier this year in reference to 2000's Bush/Gore election, and discredited in short order. Then, as now, it was claimed that the numbers purporting to represent average IQ by state came from a book entitled "IQ and the Wealth of Nations." However, one of its authors, Richard Lynn, stated that the book contains no such data.

It also bears pointing out that three states switched their electoral preference from one party to the other between 2000 and 2004, with no corresponding change in the alleged IQ of the populace.

Lastly, the hoax is reminiscent of a widely circulated email dating from 2001 which claimed, on the basis of phony documentation, that G.W. Bush has the lowest IQ of any modern president.

Having grown up in the Midwest, lived as far south as Kansas and spent considerable time in the Southwest (Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, etc.), lived in Europe and spent nearly 3 decades in New England - I'd say the least friendly, most narrow-minded and ignorant folks are in NE. They are convinced of their own superiority based on little or no evidence while appearing totally unable to maintain any kind of moral clarity - they get hysterical over the prosecution of criminals while endorsing murder of innocents; they go bonkers over a hoaked up story about the murder of an active, cruising homosexual several states away but ignore the stalking, torture, murder (by strangulation with a gasoline soaked rag) and then post-death rape of a pre-teen age boy by two homosexuals in their own back yard (Jesse Dickensing (sp?)).

They complain and rush to leave their socialist, over-taxed paradise in Massachusetts only to move to a state and then try to replicate the very over governed hell-hole in the new state. Driving through Lexington, Concord and other sites of America's greatness - the landscape is littered with bigoted, anti-Jewish, anti-Christian, fearful, muddy-minded Blame America Firsters - who demand 'Red-staters' protect them while they do everything they can to undermine their protectors and hamper them in their efforts in a legitimate war.

I've never actually underwent a formal IQ test.

That's why, whenever I meet someone, I automatically tell them that I'm a "genius."

That way, I can always trot out the genius card whenever someone disputes what I'm saying.

For example, if someone claims that I've made an inaccurate statement, I can always respond:

HEY! WHO'S THE FREAKIN' GENIUS, HERE? I know for sure it ain't you! SO SHUT THE HELL UP, YA DUMB BASTID!

Believe me, it works.

Whether or not these mean IQ scores are legitimate, you can conclude that the blue counties in the red states are bringing their state averages down. Take them out of the picture, and you have higher scores for the red states, or at least the same as the blue states...

Okay, let's try this one on the liberals - If IQ were measured in cents, Kerry supporters wouldn't have two pennies to rub together.

I lived in Mass. for a year and a half, and I concur with everything you say.

There's a reason people from the Commonwealth (Freepers excepted) have the nickname "Massholes."

Depends on the field: Ph.D.'s in areas where you are expected to be able to DO something (Engineering, Computer Science, Business, and so forth) are much more likely to be conservative than those in which there are no right answers (Humanities and Social Sciences, Education, Art, etc.).

I'd expect that there'd be a slight correlation with red states having lower IQs, but only because of demographics (VT is 98% white, etc). If my theory is correct, Hawaii might have the highest IQ because of the large % of Asians. However when you look at the actual demographic breakdowns of voters, I don't see any way how anyone can say that Republican voters aren't smarter than Democrat voters as a whole.

I'm not sure that that's totally true. I've known many Ph.D. engineers, I've even had some work for me. They do tend to be somewhat protective about their credentials. In industry no one really gives a rat's patootey about academic credentials except that they can be a shorthand way of filtering and sorting. The only time I am really surprised to find out someone has a Ph.D is when I know them to be productive and a team player. If someone's a prima donna, self-regarding "genius" I am surprised that they don't have Ph.D.

BTW, the hardest people to work with are former professors. A lot of them never quite got tenure and they had to get a job in the real world. Having ruled in the fantasty world where careers are made on discerning the tenth decimal place of some obscure probability distribution, they are unsuited to work in an environment were success is guaged by kicking and pushing a product out the door.

The former chairman of the E.E. department at an Ivy League school (and a Ph.D physics graduate of one of the most prestige physics institutions in the world) came to work at my company some years ago, for a big increase in money. He was disappointed that he couldn't just take the afternoon off whenever he wanted and go skiing. He was a very bright guy, academically, but he could not get anything done, and had a way of infuriating everyone he worked with. When he got canned by our division he landed on his feet another division of our company. I later found out his father-in-law was that division's VP for R&D. He left the company within a year of his f-i-l's retirement. I'll bet a month's pay that he has always, reliably, voted Democratic.

I don't have a clue as to Kerry's IQ - the point is, he won't release his records and his arrogance is about the only way to get him to do anything.

The SAT rating is somewhat deceptive. For example often the states that had less percentage of test takers per HS grads faired higher. Some states had much higher percentages (up to 80%) and others only had 5%.

Thus even these charts are not really reliable.

I think it's fair to say that academia and industry tend to attract different personality types. I'm in academia myself, and if you're deadwood it's far easier to survive there than in industry. OTOH, I've known plenty of academic scientists who you could call any night of the week after midnight without worrying about waking them up - because they'd be working on their research.

I'd even go so far as to say that a lot of academic scientific research is useless if you want to get a product out the door. (I'd even say that a lot of it is useless, period.) However, what's useless now may not be useless later. Among his other sins, the mathematician G. E. Hardy said that three areas which would never have practical application would be number theory (his field), general relativity, and quantum mechanics. Were he alive today, he might say it via an encrypted e-mail message sent from an electronic computer via satellite dish.

Re your co-worker: You said he was a Physics PhD. Physics and Math seem to have the same leftist infestation as the humanities, possibly because there are more people than jobs, and the ones who get in tend to come from the same schools and culture, and form a self-sustaining clique.

The 'rat-libs have long flattered themselves on their intelligence. It is based, as far as I can tell, aside from general self-aggrandizement, on the observation that university faculties, with all their higher degrees, tend to be overwhelmingly liberal.

Of course the fact remains that the campus is a tightly isolated hothouse where all manner of strange and exotic intellectual mutants thrive, while their more rubust cousins who live and work in the real world take a very different voiew of the world. Overall, the higher the education, the more conservative the politics.

I didn't mean to completely "diss" academics, they serve their purposes. And a lot "research" is worthless. Academia today is like the CIA. It has become institutionally corrupt, no longer serves the mission for which it was created and is unresponsive to its customers. (It is also become unbelievably bloated and incredibly inefficient.)
