A question to the "Ukrainians"
Posted on 11/25/2004 11:35:44 AM PST by A. Pole
I have the following question:
I see that many Ukrainians claim that Russia is not the legitimate inheritor of Kievan Rus, that the present Ukraine is.
Do you want to change the name of Ukraine into "Rus"? If not, why?

Why not into "Varyagshchina" (or "Varangiya") then? It would completely avoid even phonetic similarity with 'Rus' and a lot of associated unpleasant memories.

Because the Russians (Stalin) committed genocide on the Ukranian people in the 1920s and 30s, decimating the population. After cleansing the region, ethnic Russians moved in to occupy, overwhelming the few Ukranians left...

True enough, Stalin was born in Georgia, but he was an ethnic Russian. Then the Ukrainians must be ethnic Italians.

Why Varangya? Has it got anything to do with Rurik dynasty? Then, perhaps, Varyaghia? But Rurik was summoned to Novgorod, not Kiev. In a way, you could say, Rus' started off in Novgorod, rather then Kiev...
As to the question of Rus', however, I'd say, there are too many residual negative emotions associated with the word Russia - Rus' - in the western half of Ukraine. The whole thing looks more like a typical geopolitical spat over the influence over Central Europe then a genuine concern of promoting democracy in Ukraine. It's a very delicate situation.

True enough, Stalin was born in Georgia, but he was an ethnic Russian. Wrong. Stalin was an ethnic Georgian. No Russian name ever ended in "shvili".

I dunno about the Iraq connection, but I stand corrected. He was Georgian, but learned only Russian in school. Leftist that link may be, but it is factual. Here's another link: http://www.infoukes.com/history/famine. Same info.
