My husband donates to United Way at work through payroll deduction. It is such a corrupt organization. Several times people at the top of UW have gotten caught stealing MILLION$. I don't donate to them at all. I give things to Salvation Army and Goodwill. Clothes, furniture, shoes, appliances, cars.....
Advise your husband to look at the list of organizations that United Way supports. He might be shocked.
When I worked, I gave to the United Way via payroll deduction until I got this list, and even though there is a provision to designate certain organizations that you, the donor, wish to have your money go to, it was a mixed picture. Some got those funds, some didn't.
You would be better offf doing what you're doing: giving directly to worthy causes.
Your husband should stop the deductions and inform his company not to solicit him in the future while at work. It can be done firmly, but politely. They finally learned at my company after a couple of years to just leave me alone during the United Way donation drives.
I worked for a company in the early '80s whose Chairman of the Board was the head of United Way for a year. Talk about putting the 'strong-arm' on the employees! There was no way that he was going to allow HIS company to be anything less than 100% in donations.
United Way gives support for ABORTIONS!!!
The United Way has a nice scam going with many corporations and government employees through payroll deductions. They have been very corrupt for years.
Stopped giving to the United Way about 5 years ago. They don't do anything worthwhile anyway. They are just a middleman. They take the money you give, and they disburse it as they see fit. I can decide how I want my charitable contributions spent. I don't need them to do it for me.
I've heard bad things about United Way.
Still?
Why?
buffyt: We have lots of armtwisting at employer's about giving to UW. My son has been involved in BSA since he was young(Eagle soon!) so when they started discriminating against the Boy Scouts I sent this letter to Human Resources. I cc'd and mailed copies of it to my local UW chapter and my son's BSA chapter/division/region offices.
Dear Mrs. HR Person,
Please inform me how to remove the United Way contribution from my payroll deductions. Yes, our LOCAL United Way has not directly participated in discrimination against the Boy Scouts of America but....after correspondence with LOCAL and national United Way representatives AND researching their activities in this area, I will no longer support the United Way.
Although not locally, the United Way itself has come down with a cancer-like disease. Some infected parts of this body called United Way have, while imposing funding cuts on the Boy Scouts of America, implied that I should continue to fund them. The United Way's actions indicate to me that they assume I should want my ten year old son to go on camping trips supervised by and learning from "men" who love other "men". The have assumed incorrectly.
Because some cancers require surgical removal, I wish to surgically remove United Way from the "supply line" and contribute DIRECTLY to the Boy Scouts of America. Because of the financial damage caused by United Way nationally, my direct contribution to the Boys Scouts of America will be increased to far exceed my current payroll deductions.
Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
Sincerely,
Johnny Crab
