Winner declared in Ukraine; opposition calls for national strike
By Peter Finn / The Washington Post
KIEV, Ukraine - Ukraine's Central Elections Commission declared Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych the winner of the country's bitterly disputed presidential vote Wednesday, defying strong pressure from the United States and other Western countries. In response, opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko called for a national strike starting Thursday.
Following the commission's ruling that Yanukovych won 49.46 percent of the vote to 46.61 percent for Yushchenko, rhetoric from both camps escalated, with each accusing the other of planning a coup. Hundreds of thousands of opposition supporters remained in the streets, pressing their claim that Yanukovych stole the election. Smaller numbers of Yanukovych supporters also arrived in the city.
Socialist Party leader Oleksandr Moroz, one of Yuschenko's key strategists, said the opposition was "organizing citizens, stopping lessons at schools and universities, stopping work at enterprises, stopping transport ... and, thus, we'll force the authorities to think about what they are doing."
President Kuchma said that Yushchenko's supporters were trying to "carry out ... a coup d'etat," according to the Interfax News Agency. He told foreign governments to "refrain from interference in Ukraine's affairs."

The losing side was allied to the Socialists. I feel better about this election result already.
Why was Yuschenko's Socialist as well as his George Soros links ignored by the hot and heavy media reporting here?
And just where have you been all evening anyway? :-)
LOL!
Well I am home now - and Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
Happy Thanksgiving Des. Click on my posts for a summary of the fun I had today. You were missed.
Oh that's right -- they were trying to recouperate from overseeing the election and potential disenfranchisement of the American voter.
Hope your day is terrific tomorrow. Happy Thanksgiving!!
You are here now, but all the people who need to be enlightened have gone to bed, after reaffirming that Yuschenko will bring freedom and raise the dead ( as Kerry proclaimed here) in Ukraine.
Soros and Yuschenko are all good, Putin is all evil.
They don't grasp the idea that the EU would like nothing more, than to see the US and Russia have a rift or worse.
Isn't this a Socialist vs. a Communist? Hard to be enthusiastic about either, but the real question should be who actually won the vote.
Well exit polls showed a Kerry win! Just like exit polls showed a Yuschenko win.
Buy your wife a computer also and introduce her to FR, then she won't mind if you spend your evenings here.
do you not understand that the entire free world is claiming the election as a fraud?
Ukrainian Communist leader says power must be transferred to parliament
Nov 24 2004 3:23PM
KYIV. Nov 24 (Interfax-Ukraine) - Ukrainian Communist party leader and presidential candidate in the first round Petro Symonenko said the Ukrainian elections must be declared invalid and power must be passed over to parliament.
"Taking into account massive vote rigging, I propose declaring the 2004 presidential elections invalid, raising the problem of political reform in parliament and amending the constitution. All power must be passed over to parliament. The current president's tenure must be suspended and the Cabinet must be obliged to exclusively fulfill parliament's decisions," Symonenko said in a statement circulated on Wednesday.
this is not about soros, this is about a fraudulant election. its amazing that you can keep spouting crap about a us/russian rift when an entire countries election is being stolen.
I say let Jimmy Carter referee this mess.
Tell the free world tough luck - Bush beat Gore fair and square per America's electoral system.
I don't know. Yuschenko looks bad enough to qualify as risen now. LOL.
On Strike Shut It Down!
