I lost an old friend today. No, she didn't die. She screamed at me for my many-year metmorphisis from rad-liberal to conservative. She doesn't understand why I have changed, and is unable to listen because she is filled with bile, anger and hate. She wishes Bush evil and hates US policy. She has turned into a Michal Moore robot.
We have not been close friends for many years but I did enjoy keeping in touch. Because of our thirty year history I have treated the friendship gingerly but with great fondness.
Politics is hell.
I lost a friend this summer. I was pretty sure she was a dimocrat, but we had a six year friendship that ended while she was vacationing here. She must have also known I was a conservative, within a couple of hours of picking her up at the airport, she started in with all the msm liberal talking points. I very politely asked her to not let this spoil our friendship, that we had been friends for six years without ever needing a political discussion. She became a typical, foaming at the mouth liberal. I drove her to the nearest motel, I actually kind of feared having her at my house, she was that nuts. Guess I'll stick to my own "kind" from now on...
So right you are! I worried she'd show up in '04. Trouble is, they couldn't 'quagmire', 'pantys on prisoner's heads', Awol in Texas Rathergate, no WMDs, wrongwar-wrongtime, and make it stick with Bush.
Their hollow, phony, lifelong wannabe candidate means to me that the left is out of ammo. As an American, that makes me proud. F**k 'em and the Marxist camels they rode in on.
Shoot leadpenny! I saw that movie and I forgot that scene. I'll have to see it again........*~*. Bill Clinton was responsible for alot of the things we see today that is not in keeping with the decent things that has kept this country strong. A great myth has been built around his administration but we know better.
I thought I knew her very well. But, as time has proven, I barely knew her at all. Did I change that much? Or did she? I still miss her in any event, but I've come to grips with the situation.
The ancient Chinese proverb, "May You Live in Interesting Times", is all too true, alas.
It's sad but sometimes we outgrow our friends. It sounds like you did. It's quality, not quantity that is important. That, and faith in the dear Lord.
I will be thinking of you this weekend, and hope you are well.
Similar situation -- best friend in h.s., VERY conservative. Both of us started at the same college, I got married, she went on to medical school. Haven't heard from her in a long time. Very liberal -- she outgrew me and I outgrew her as well.
"It is tolerance that pubbies have offered, however, radical dems want total acceptance, which can't be achieved and it just drives them crackers. Ironically, tolerance is what they profess, unfortunately, they don't seem to have it in them when the shoe (or Presidency) is on the other foot."
I think you have hit the nail on the head. Still it does hurt to lose a friendship that you have valued for years, but life goes on and there are more friends to be made.
"I think that he likes what Moore is saying so much that he doesn't care that its a load of crap."
Must be a lib trait. Don't bother with facts when lies will advance your cause. In the past it always worked for Dan Rather, thank God it didn't work this time.
She was a special lady and I miss her. Sadly, her Dems have let it all hang out and I don't think we, Repubs, have much hope of stuffing it back in.
The staggering number of abortions performed in the US would have been shocking to her and partial birth abortion would have horrified her.
I knew another elderly woman who always voted Dem and when I asked her about the abortion position of the Dem party and gave her the facts about abortion in this country, she couldn't believe it. LITERALLY, she wouldn't believe it. It was too much for her to imagine. I am sure that my grandmother would have been the same.
I'll bet you never dreamed this thread would go to almost 300 replies? It could go to 1000 when the post-Thanksgiving horror stories start coming in.
There's no need to feel that way! Happy Thanks Giving, either way.
Well, noticed this year my landlord put out a sign for Sen Chuck Grassley (widely supported by farmers here). I recall wondering which side of the fence he was on. Last night, he invited me to attend Thanksgiving services at the local Lutheran church. Met his son, who's in the USAF. So, perhaps the effect can be positive, also?
The real question is, if Jeb runs in 2008 and wins, will certain heads begin to explode? ;-)
I'm too fed up with the borders and immigration issue at the moment to contemplate another Bush family member. Besides, it's starting to look like a dynasty. America doesn't need dynasties.
I can relate. It's down to me and my mother - the only remaining ones with political sanity - after the passing of my father - who worked for a certain company in Mclean Va - long before Carter screwed it up.
All my brothers and sisters are various shades of pink - and none of them can seem to connect the way they live their lives to their politics. It is strange to watch people metamorphosis into philosophical zombies when talking liberalism - talking things far, far, far away where none of it actually has any bearing on their personal reality- where they DEMAND commonsense.
I've found it useful to answer nutcase accusations from the more vehement siblings by mixing historical events. For example - in answering why I support killings of "millions of Iraqis" - I would say wacko things like: "It was necessary to bomb Kosovo from 15,000 feet - because even though it caused more innocent casualties - none of our guys would be at risk - but you're right - there's no way we should have bombed Dresden, Tokyo, Berlin and Hiroshima....no reason at all."
Answering your wacko rejoinder causes them to tabulate through their confused thinking and hypocrisies - which at least gets them off their single-minded hysteria.
"If you think liberals per se can't be quite intelligent (e.g., Daniel Patrick Moynihan), it may be you who needs to get out more."
Perhaps you didn't notice that DPM has been attacked viciously by his fellow Dems and liberal groups for his papers on the black family and on social security? he's not the kind of lib that has driven so many from the Dem ranks, nor the type who has created the current discord.
"Friends-of-friends complained that I had hit "reply all"
My girlfriend would get those dem talking point email forwards from one of her coworkers and then forward them on to me.
One day I replied to my friend with a concise point by point destruction of the dem email and then I hit reply all.
My friend never got another liberal email forward again.
Thank you for your kind words. And you're right; it's time to nurture some different relationships and, to borrow a trite phrase from the left, it's time to "move on". It is not healthy for me to continue to attempt to conciliate with toxic people.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Hey the fun part about getting thrown off was that
I ended up enrolling him in some "Jihad" clubs...so now
he'll be getting monthly news letters....:-)
I have never seen that quote. I just printed it out for my oldest daughter who is keeping a quote book.
