Maki Chosen to Design New UN Building

New York City officials have confirmed that the United Nations Development Corporation is talking with Pritzker Prize-winning architect Fumihiko Maki to design an additional building for the United Nations in New York.

The building, on First Avenue between 41st and 42nd Streets, will become the UN's temporary headquarters while the current building, to its north, is renovated and enlarged. Upon completion of the main building's expansion, the new building will house UN employees currently scattered throughout the city.

Details are still unconfirmed, but NY EDC spokesperson Janel Patterson said the building would be about 35 stories tall, no higher than the secretariat.
