WASHINGTON President Bush is heading into his second term, with his job approval rising to 55 percent, a new poll shows.Bush's post-election bounce and growing public support come at a time when 72 percent of Americans say the country is deeply divided, according to the nationwide Gallup/CNN/USA Today poll.

In one noteworthy finding, Americans oppose, by more than 2 to 1, a constitutional amendment to let a foreign-born U.S. citizen like California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger run for president.

I am a Cuban born American citizen completly opposed to the ARNOLD ammendment..the idea is ridiculous
It is being forwarded by people who ultimately hope to get a foreign born liberal like granholm elected president, but are using (R)nold as the popular 'face' of the effort.
Tom Daschles, when asked for a reaction, replied "I'm saddened, deeply saddened."
I never understood how people like foreign-born Henry Kissinger and Madeleine Albright (who I believe was born in Czechoslovakia) could have been Secy of State, because that position is in line for the presidency.
You make a really good point. I wonder why no one has asked this question in the media?
I'm heartened to see Americans understand the wisdom of not lightly amending our Constitution. If Bush had received 55% three weeks ago, he would have won MN, WI, MI and PA and increased his Electoral College Majority to over 300+ votes. This ain't a liberal country and liberals must be going bonkers finding out even more Americans support the President than they did on Election Day. Happy Holidays, every one!
BTW: Thanks for your efforts with your web site.
I always tell people to repeat after me: "President Soros, President Chirac, President Castro..."
Regarding naturalized citizens in the line of presidential succession: they are not eligible. The line skips over them. For example, it appears that Secy. of Labor Elaine Chao is ineligible:

Thank you. I had never thought about it and I was curious.
Gallop, CNN, and USAToday - the three sources I trust the most. /s
I suspect the President's low approval ratings prior to the election were as accurate at that day's exit polls and designed to diminish voter's perceptions. Had all the media covered the President's intervention on behalf of his Secret Service man in Chile, I suspect a reputable poll would show considerably higher than a 55% rate.
Bush would have gotten 65 million votes on November 2nd. A new all-time record!
The only exception to the line provided in the law states that to ascend to the Presidency, the next person in line must be constitutionally eligible. Any person holding an office in the line of succession who, for example, is not a naturally-born citizen cannot become President. In this case, that person would be skipped and the next eligible person in the line would become President.
It's called going with a proven winner. George Bush won handily and people are gravitating to a winner. I still resent not being able to sport a Bush/Cheney bumper sticker due to fears of my car being defaced by the Democrat losers.
I wonder also why no one ever brings up the fact that Ralph Nadar, being Lebanese by birth and a naturalized US citizen, continues to run and run for President. Not that any one expects him to win a single electoral vote.
Thank you! I didn't realize they simply got skipped. Good to know!
Thank you.
Look how easy it was to get a person elected whose lifetime quest was to rise to power and proceed to systematically dismantle America and all she has represented for two hundred years. Bill Clinton purported to be everything he was not, and got away with it, and he was native born.
It would be so easy for a foreign "plant", with clandestine financial backing and the best subversive support money can buy, to defeat us from within. 'Gotta draw the line somewhere.
These approval ratings will drop drastically when America learns that Bush was responsible for the basketball mayhem.
I was just reading all about it on another thread. Darn Bush.
>I still resent not being able to sport a bush/cheney bumper sticker due to fear of my care being defaced<
Well, I took a deep breath and stuck one on my car, scanning it minutely each time I exited the grocery store, and nary a scratch! My county has become a kinder, gentler one with the all fed up Republican Californians and Oregonians moving up here. Welcome!
I read somewhere that a foreign-born cabinet officer would simply be skipped over in the line of succession as unqualified. The same would apply if the Speaker of the House or a cabinet officer is younger than thirty-five.
