Melee in Chile seen as 'big deal'
Washington Times ^ | 11/23/04 | Jerry Seper and Bill Sammon

White House officials were still shaking their heads in disbelief yesterday that President Bush personally had to rescue a U.S. Secret Service agent from angry Chilean security officials Saturday night.
"This is a pretty big deal," said a senior White House official, who called the incident a "melee."

"I mean, the guy who was supposed to be guarded had to rescue the guy who was supposed to be guarding him."
The official expressed astonishment that Chilean security officials had stopped the No. 2 agent on Mr. Bush's security detail from accompanying the president into a meeting with another world leader, an unprecedented public breach of security arrangements agreed upon in advance.

In contrast to Chile, which rejected Secret Service protocols, Colombia ceded control of 15,000 of its troops to the United States when Mr. Bush visited there yesterday. Colombian President Alvaro Uribe also agreed to allow heavily armed U.S. Navy forces to patrol the waters around Cartegena in rubber boats.

I think it was a pretty big deal too. I sincerely hope the Bush administration finds a way to impress on Chile's President that we are not amused by his goons' actions.

Pres. Bush will probably be made an honorary member of the SS.

"How many times will this story be posted?" "You should have just included any new information into an existed thread!"

I went ahead and decided to post that to save others the trouble.

This explains in greater detail that this was no innocent SNAFU. It had been agreed in advance that the president's security detail would accompany him into the hall. You don't do s**t like this by accident. The Chileans were clearly trying to send a "message" but they got one sent right back at em'.

I can't get enough of this story. Gotta love the man. Wish I knew what was going on behind the scenes. I'm sure a lot of security folks' BS needle was pinned by this episode. Very suspicious event.

Thanks for the logo Safrguns!

SS = Secret Service, not SS as in Nazi.

Uh, I think that was a tongue in cheek comment - Making President Bush an honorary member of the Secret Service - and was not a reference to anything Germanic.

I'm sure the Secret Service left some broken/damaged fingers/thumbs behind. It's all good.

Try again.... our Secret Service is referred to as the SS sometimes. It's not the Waffen SS that we're talking about. Maybe remedial history lessons....
