Excuse the vanity, but I am so damn happy I could kiss Helen Thomas. Well, maybe not, but whatever.
If anyone remembers a few months ago; I had posted a request for advice after discovering a Great Blue Heron eating the Koi from my backyard pond. Being a beginner Koi fanatic, I was unaware of the hazards of putting expensive fish in my pond without some form of protection. I could not get a dog, because I am away from home part of every week.
Well, two days ago, I finished a new pond, and moved my fish (and some new replacements) into it, along with two motion detecting, infra-red sprinkers, called the "Scarecrow".
Many people told me that these things would not work, because Herons dont move fast enough to trip the sensors. Well just about 15 minutes ago, I happened to be walking by the patio door, and I saw a HUGE Heron strolling towards my new pond.
Normally, I would run outside screaming at the top of my lungs, but I decided that it might be worth losing a fish to see if these new devices worked. As the Heron got within 3 feet of the pond, he was nailed in the chest with a stream of water from the left side Scarecrow, and took off like a bat out of hell.
Yeah, I am so effin' thrilled, maybe I could kiss Helen Thomas after all. Thanks to everyone who gave me advice about my pond. I can now leave home without worrying about my damn fish.
P.S. Anyone thinking that the Dog is going soft over some fancy fish, you might be right.
Congratulations! I remember that thread -- some of the ideas you were given were hilarious!
One for the good guys! (LOL ... good story)
Betcha the heron shows up tomorrow night in a wet suit. ;^)
That's great! I remember all the suggestions you got a while back. I'm glad this one worked!
Hey cool!
Herons do move extremely fast when they strike.
I'm sharing in your victory. The look on your face must have been priceless.
Next time you should leave a bar of soap for him to use.
I hope it keeps working for you. I used to sell those for deer and they got used to it and stopped running off
Now set up a web cam so we can all watch. :-)
I would use that new HUNT by INTERNET and blow the sucker into feather dust! ;>)
If you are talking about kissing Helen Thomas . . . forgive me if I'm concerned for you FRiend!
I love it when a plan comes together!!
I remember that very enjoyable thread (while sympathizing with you on your fish issue.) I'm so glad the sprinkler thing works.
Congrats! Helen will be over shortly to collect. She said she hopes you're not a loathsome Cowboy like that awful George Bush.
That must have been quite a sight, seeing that Heron get blasted. I know exactly how you feel, I once found my favorite koi that I had raised dead by the side of the pond, and I was so heartbroken.
I do have one question. In my pond, I would think frogs would be setting that thing off constantly. Is the motion detector just aimed too high for that or what?
can you post a picture of yours sometime?
