Again: Chileans Offend Bush

Hours after President Bush dove into a fracas to rescue his lead Secret Service agent from a confrontation with Chilean security officials, word surfaced of another security dispute. This time, an elaborate state dinner Sunday night was the casualty.

The dinner planned for Bush and 200 others by Chilean President Ricardo Lagos was reportedly scrapped after Chile was unwilling to accept security measures sought by the U.S. Secret Service, including a demand that all guests pass through metal detectors.

Leading Chilean newspaper El Mercurio reported that the disagreement led Bush and Lagos to instead hold a small "social dinner" with a handful of aides from each side.

On Saturday night, Chilean security barred Bush's bodyguards from accompanying the president into a dinner for Asia-Pacific leaders. As a pushing and shoving match ensued, Bush strode over to the melee, reached into the group and pulled mustachioed agent Nick Trotta out by the lapel and into the dinner.

Trotta has been taking good-natured ribbing for having to be rescued by the man he's charged with protecting.

Security details for events like this are put in place months in advance of the events. Too many questions...did Chile pledge security and then pull it?

How about the leaders from the other countries (Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, Chinese Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, Vietnam)? Did they agree that 200 others be let in without proper security precautions?

I think Chile tried to pull a fast one.

You gotta love this President.

With that said, he needs to get the hell out of there if they dont take his security seriously.

" I think Chile tried to pull a fast one."

Before I can offer a response, a little more clarification is in order.

The U.S.-Chile Free Trade Agreement: An Early Record of Success

After thirteen years of bilateral conversations and two of negotiations, the U.S. – Chile Free Trade Agreement entered into force on January 1, 2004. On that date, tariffs on 90% of U.S. exports to Chile and 95% of Chilean exports to the United States were eliminated. Chile is currently ranked as the 36th largest export market for the United States.

The SS are the guys that will willing take a bullet for the Prez... Any less from the Prez would have been ungrateful..

The real story is this is unusual. Few other presidents, if any at all, would have done this.. its so apolitical.. Cudos to the shrub...

Maybe I've been a little too hard on the man that carries Alfred E. Neumans likeness.. I'm willing to take it all back some of the things I've said.. If he turns into a junk yard dog in the Capitol.. Cause if one thing is needed in the next four years in the Capitol. The democrats must get mauled.. and savaged like a burgular in the living room.. If he sends Laura to do it, thats OK too, but that would make him a junk yard CAT...

By the way, what ever happened to Sandy Burgular..?
Is he in JAIL YET.?...

What about the advance work? What I can't understand is why that wasn't all handled well in advance of Bush's going there. Typically, all the detail is ironed out by the security personnel from both countriese. It seems there has been a major lapse in presiential security that is unacceptable and it can't ALL be placed at the feet of the Chileans. If they had refused this level of security during the planning sessions, the trip could have been canceled, without this big brouhaha.

An agreement with a single state isn't the same as an agreement that sets up a body of governance between multiple states.

Trade is good as long as it is beneficial to both states, but more importantly to our nation.

I agree. I would have thought all of the protocol would have been worked out in excruciating detail in advance.

I agree, if Chili wants to see the end of themselves, if they are that suicidal to risk the life of our popular president then they are obviously insane and need to be delt with in another manner more suiting their mental derangment.

The idiots need to realize they are in the same hemisphere, Americans can mobilize in a nano second and head their way, flags flying, and very determined to attain payback.

Last night when I picked up Bush 'retrieving " his top secret service man from a crowd of guards 'Chilian',
I emailed everyone on my list and said 'What a MAN'.

He didn't call the authorities or call an aide, he just went into what could have been a dangerous group and pulled HIS man out. Turned shrugged his shoulders and walked up and shook some one's hand.

This group were ,so they say, people who could have been dangerous to the gathering of V.I.P.s from many countries.

Do you realize any one of those not being admitted could have had a gun a knife or some weapon that may have caused injury to our president.

Talk about bravery he just has it!!!

The fracas was on T.V. all morning and Fox is still
showing it.If you haven't seen it, you have missed a real sight.

It is worrisome. Still, Lots of good can come from this. I imagine the bond between He and his security is tighter then ever. HE showed more regard for them then his own saftey...I'm feeling prouder then ever. :)

There's something that should be stated clearly on one of these threads. When the Free Trade Agreement of the Americas (FTAA) is completely implemented, these yahoo nations in Central and South America will be given the right to help determine our nation's policies.

Clearly stated on this thread: All specifics of a treaty must be passed by congress, signed off by the president before it becomes law. The yahoos to our south have NOT been given any legal right to determine or nations policies.

Mr. President, come home. If these third-worlders are willing to put you at risk, forget about 'em.

You couldn't be more wrong with your statement about "third-worlders."

Phelps Dodge
link to south American Mines. Check out Chile.

Phelps Dodge is an American international mineral resource and industrial manufacturing company with a proud history dating from 1834.

I could type all day about global industrialization however time is limited today. So I will give you one more tip.

PCU or Southern Peru Copper Corp

Div & Yield: $3.298 (7.04%)

The past few years have been very good for "third-worlders" and investors. Those dividends pay many 401k's maybe yours.

The question is what was the Bush message to Chile?

One more thing:
Let's take a look at why mining stock are up.

Debt limit to rise to $8.18 trillion!

Dollar's declining value economists and budget hawks fear that rising deficits are contributing to the steadily declining value of the dollar, which will increase consumer costs, and that those deficits eventually will drive up interest rates and slow the economy.

U.S. Government Reaches $7.38 Trillion Debt Limit (Update2)

Snip:
Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan and Snow have both called in the past for Congress to eliminate the debt ceiling, noting lawmakers determine the amount of debt that must be sold when they approve government spending measures.

WOW! Great Idea Alan...NOT!

Well, it looks like the spending will continue and copper and gold will rise and your dollar will buy less. However it is all part of the business cycle and if your invested correctly you will be OK.

I will be watching Congress looking for whispers of spending controls.

Happy Investing...
