The Republicans' success in Senate races sent Democrats into a tailspin and provided a series of unique occurrences.
First, the election of Mel Martinez in Florida means he will be the first Cuban-American to serve in the Senate.
In Louisiana, David Vitter will be the first Republican ever to represent the state in the Senate.
Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, who was initially appointed to her Senate seat, became the first person born in Alaska elected to represent the state in the Senate, according to Senator George Allen of Virginia, who directed the Republican campaign effort.
And, Mr. Allen said, Senate victories in Georgia and South Carolina mean that for the first time those two states will be represented in the Senate strictly by Republicans.
And here's one the Democratic leader, Tom Daschle of South Dakota, no doubt could have lived without. He became the first Senate leader since 1952 to lose his election back home.
Couldn't have happened to a nicer chap. See ya DascHOLE!!!
But then we couldn't possibly be mentioning these new additions and calling us all racists and bigots at the same time.
My point wasn't who got bumped but why? The "article" accepts no blame whatsoever for the party and in turn offers no credit to us.
There have been three prior GOP Senators from Louisiana, but all were appointed during the reconstruction era. The most recent one was this fellow:

Senator William P. Kellogg (R-LA) 1868-1883
followed by...

Senator David Vitter (R-LA) 2005-
It's been a while, but we're back in style in the Bayou state!
What did you expect? When have you ever seen credit given to conservatives by the MSM. I'm just pleased when they don't get their way.
He should grow a moustache like Kellog.
Van Tran was elected to the California legislature, but it would be nice if he moves up to Congress some day.
"In Louisiana, David Vitter will be the first Republican ever to represent the state in the Senate."
Not quite. Louisiana had been represnted by a Republican during Reconstruction, when Senators were appointed by the state legislatures.
However, David Vitter is the first Republican in Louisiana history to be elected its Senator by popular vote.
Your state has much to be proud of. Next, there are those two Congressional runoffs on December 4. Any word on how those are going?
If I'm not mistaken, Van Tran's constituants are represented in Congress by Edward Royce.
"It's been a while, but we're back in style in the Bayou state!"
Agree with you there, BB. It sure does feel good to finally start seeing an end to the "Good Ole Boy Network". Next, we've got to vote out Mary and Kathleen.
2nd of indian heritage. Somone from california beat him to it, in the 1960's.
Congressman Dalip Singh Saund. ;-)
Also interesting, Jim DeMint is taking over Fritz Hollings' Senate seat, I bet he's the first Republican to hold that seat in about 130 years. Lindsey Graham took over for Strom, but Strom was originally elected as a Dem. My guess is that DeMint is the first South Carolina Republican to win an open senate seat in the state's entire history.
Why doesn't Vitter get his nose fixed? It looks like someone busted his nose.
