A ringing cell phone landed a 17-year-old Patchogue girl facing drug charges in a jail cell this week after an angry district court judge sentenced her to 21 days for contempt.

Mariela Acevedo of 21 Hammond St. incurred the wrath of District Court Judge Salvatore Alamia on Tuesday. As she awaited her hearing, an electronic device went off in Alamia's Central Islip courtroom and he warned everyone to shut off all cell phones and pagers or face contempt charges.

"If you don't know how to shut it off, go outside and introduce it to the heel of your shoe, he said according to a transcript.

When Acevedo's phone subsequently sounded, Alamia called the teenager forward and asked, "Did you think I was playing with you?"

I imagine if this judge was caught with drugs and had to face another judge, he would heed the warning to turn off his cell phone in that judge's presence.

WTF are you taking about?

This has nothing to do with anything. The individual told the judge she thought she had turned her cell phone off. For crying out loud.

This has happened to me at least a dozen times. The buttons are so small, and sometimes if you don't fully depress the off button the damn thing comes back on or fails to shut off.

The tax paid judged is drunk with power and should be REMOVED!

Some of the most arrogant people I have ever met were tax paid judges.

How many judges have you met?

If I'm going to get 21 days for BS, I'll punch the judge in the mouth and get my 'time's worth".

Be sure to post the news article here after you do that! I can't wait to read it and the posts that follow. :-)

What's just as scary is that people are defending this guy. If I was convicted for everytime I forgot to turn off the cell ringer I would have a lengthy criminal record by now.

And now the truth comes out.

The folks who don't have the manners to turn off their damned phones are the ones defending this insolent little druggie.

The judge was well within his rights to do what he did although I personally think the sentence was a little harsh, it does send a message. These self-absorbed little egotists who need to be yacking their nonsense into a cell phone all day have to be shown when their rudeness affects others.

Way to go judge! Glad to know you are a Republican.

You'd get a wee bit more than 21 days for that. And if the bailiff shot you dead, I'd have no problem.

People like you really shouldn't own cell phones.

Are you deaf?

The arrogant judge asked her if she thought she was playing games, and the teenager stated "I THOUGHT I DID TURN IT OFF"

The exact same thing has happend to me and millions of others. Sometimes the phone doesn't go off, and actually comes back on, or the tiny little button is not fully depressed.

This teenager is NOT in the freaking military damn it, This GD arrogent tax paid judge is drunk with power. She should of had the bailiff simple take the phone.

SHeesh. This judge is clearly an assh*le!

WTF are you taking about?

Grow some manners before you face a judge.

This has nothing to do with anything. The individual told the judge she thought she had turned her cell phone off. For crying out loud.

This girl also was playing with her phone during the court session. Sounds like she could of cared less. The judge knew this and commented on it....

"I know you've been playing with it all morning, sayonara."

This has happened to me at least a dozen times. The buttons are so small, and sometimes if you don't fully depress the off button the damn thing comes back on or fails to shut off.

You are not a 17 y/o with good eyesight that plays constantly with their phone. I have one of these things too, I can tell when it is off clearly enought. Heck, if a judge told me to make sure my phone is off, I am unpluggin the battery.

How come I never have that problem?

Maybe the people who do have that problem would be wise to either (a) make sure the cell phone is actually turned off (it takes maybe one extra second), or (b) terminate their cell phone service, because they are too damn STUPID to use a cell phone anyway.

"I personally think the sentence was a little harsh"

the guy is a loose cannon. He needs a long vacation at minimum. He's not acting judiciously. It's not good for judges to be abusing their position in this manner.

Sounds like you and orangelobster had a previous run-in with a judge.

DOH!

I routinely go to court for a living and witness first hand the arrogance of some of these tax paid judges. It's beyond belief.

Sheesh, why am I talking to someone named ducklips?

It's a mad house!

Comes down to a matter of credibility, I think. The teen's response sounds lame and unconvincing; I don't really believe her.

After you've been told/reminded several times, watch the display go dark when you turn off the phone. And if you still can't figure out if it's on or off, remove the battery.

A jerk? He warned them to turn the phones off or face contempt charges. It's not like it was a surprize.

Are you deaf?

No. I'm not. And my reading and comprehension skills are excellent as well. They are much more important in this medium than my hearing.

This statement "If you don't know how to shut it off, go outside and introduce it to the heel of your shoe." means that "I THOUGHT I DID TURN IT OFF" is not an acceptable excuse.

Have a nice day.

They probably think they voted for Buchanan in 2000 instead of Gore.
