A ringing cell phone landed a 17-year-old Patchogue girl facing drug charges in a jail cell this week after an angry district court judge sentenced her to 21 days for contempt.

Mariela Acevedo of 21 Hammond St. incurred the wrath of District Court Judge Salvatore Alamia on Tuesday. As she awaited her hearing, an electronic device went off in Alamia's Central Islip courtroom and he warned everyone to shut off all cell phones and pagers or face contempt charges.

"If you don't know how to shut it off, go outside and introduce it to the heel of your shoe, he said according to a transcript.

When Acevedo's phone subsequently sounded, Alamia called the teenager forward and asked, "Did you think I was playing with you?"

If I was convicted for everytime I forgot to turn off the cell ringer I would have a lengthy criminal record by now.

Spend a lot of ti me in court?

You probably haven't lived long enough to establish a lengthy criminal record yet, but give you enough time.

Joe, as usual, you're getting totally out of control.

It's plain to see what side of the line you stand on, so sit down.

The judges in this country are not only out of control but elitist, disgraceful, power-mad idiots.

But only the Republican ones. Right Cowgirl?

People who hate cell phones are worse than smoke-nazis. They are phones, sometimes they ring, get used to it. If I'm talking to a friend at a restaurant what difference does it make it they are at the table with me or on the phone?

Screw the judge. It's time all judges realized that they are just government employees, no better than the clowns at the DMV. A little power makes a little man even smaller

"I'm positive that Lobster is in the wrong place and is an 18-year-old high school sophomore."

No, I'm not 18, but you're never too old to be sophmoric. Loosen up Jesse and have some fun on occasion.

Why can't anyone answer this?

Because most others on this thread are adults and we don't want to embarrass you by pointing out the topic of this thread is not illegal aliens...

You can bet yer bottom dollar if it was a Democrat it wouldn't mention his party affiliation, IF this was given the story in the first place.

Why are you concerned? What did he do wrong?

No doubt that she would have been better off leaving the cellphone outside the courtroom.

It just occurred to me that some cell phone company might have thought it'd be a neat feature to make the phone ring when you turn it off, you know, so that it warns you that you're turning it off so you don't accidentally turn it off.

As poorly thought out as many of these devices seem to be, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if someone had already put this "feature" into their cellphones.

Only SOME people must obey the laws.

Look, we have gang activity in a formerly crime-free town thanks to the cheap labor lobby.

May they rot in hell.

I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with principle over party; I've drawn plenty of ire for blasting the GOP in general and Bush in particular over certain profound displays of idiocy. My thoughts on this situation, however, have zero to do with going easy on this judge because he's a Republican. Yes, it sounds harsh, but I just have a feeling we're not being told the real context of how this happened. I know lots of judges are VERY serious about not wanting cellphones ringing in their courtrooms. This guy is obviously one of them, and again, I suspect the girl may've defied him with an attitude.

No, it's more like "Why are others getting away with breaking the law when I have to obey it?"

Any law-abiding citizen would wonder that.

But I guess your cheap lawn-care and cheap lettuce makes it all OK, doesn't it?

It's all about the almighty buck, right and wrong be dammed, isn't it?

How does that differ --in the slightest-- from the "if it feels good, do it" mentality that liberals have?

"If it makes you a fast buck, do it". There. I've adjusted it for your political leanings.
