[New Jersey] Bear attack takes on greater menace; Teens pawed and bitten by prowling cub
Newark Star-Ledger ^ | November 19, 2004 | BRIAN T. MURRAY

Posted on 11/19/2004 9:52:01 AM PST by d-back

The encounter last weekend between three bears and two Boy Scouts at a camp in Warren County was more harrowing than originally reported, as the bears pawed at the teenagers for an hour, bit one of them and attempted to bite the other, according to a report by state wildlife investigators.

The boys, who were later vaccinated for rabies, cowered on a rock as they fended off the two 60-pound cubs and the mother bear at the Yards Creek Scout Reservation in Blairstown on Saturday night, wildlife investigators said.

One of the boys was bitten twice by a cub. The animal first bit down on the boy's left arm -- leaving four scratch marks as the youth pulled away -- and then bit the boy's right hand, leaving three puncture wounds, according to a Division of Fish and Wildlife report obtained by The Star-Ledger on Wednesday. The second boy escaped injury when the second cub bit his coat sleeve -- but missed his arm -- and tried to pull him off the rock, the report said.

The state Department of Environmental Protection did not release the report until last night -- after being pressed by The Star-Ledger-- leaving officials from the Central New Jersey Council of the Boy Scouts to field questions about the incident. The council initially reported the incident as a brief, minor encounter with two bears, and said only one bear had "scratched" a scout's hand before the cubs ran off. . . .

(bears don't hibernate - they bruminate)

Hmmmm.... I thought that only cold-blooded animals bruminate.

Hi Huck-

Posted by Huck:
"...If you go camping in bear country..."

C'mon Huck, bear country? We're talking about the most densely-populated state in the USA, fer' crying out loud. Where these kids were attacked is mere minutes drive from shopping malls, schools, movie theaters, TGIFridays', quickie marts, and typical suburban sprawl.

If this incident were in Alaska, your position would be understandable. A reasonable suburban NJ resident doesn't expect to have to tangle with man-sized creatures when he or she takes a walk in a state park.

Warn visitors, aggressively advise them against hiking at certain times of the year, make pepper spray easily available, and promote the open carry of shotguns, rifles, and handguns when afield, and then people may carry some responsibility if they're attacked.

No, I guess they shouldn't go in the woods unless they expect to be attacked by bears. They should sit at home and play XBox.

And we should release wolves and mountain lions at High Point. If Huck gets "nicked" by a wild animal while taking out the garbage, well, he shouldn't live in the sticks, he should move to Jersey City.

Good point, Huck.

Have you been to Warren County? All of NJ isn't Newark, or else we wouldn't be discussing BEARS. Think!

The shouldn't go into known BEAR country without being prepared for bear encounters. They should stay at home.

And we should release wolves and mountain lions at High Point.

HAHAHAHA! What are you smoking? Can I have some? Who is saying release animals anywhere? Just shows...

If Huck gets "nicked" by a wild animal while taking out the garbage, well, he shouldn't live in the sticks, he should move to Jersey City.

That is correct. No one made me buy a home in an area that has animals. I chose it.

That is correct. If I did, I'd say kill all the animals, just in case.

Hi Huck-

Yes, of course I've been to Warren County many times. I don't have a problem with bears, I have more of a problem that we humans are not properly managing the bear population. Our viewpoint probably isn't that far apart, but I feel you're just trying to "make a point" now.

Amen, Blue Jay, and you said it better than I could.

Huck's taking the hardcore Darwinist view to absurd extremes.

I just think it's an idiotic non-story. The idea that Boy Scouts go out on a camping trip and encounter bears should not be alarming. And as far as I can tell, they got a few scratches, whoopdi-do. If you don't want to see wildlife, don't go in the woods.

?????

I heard bear was similar to pork.

The early settlers prised it above venison and regularly made bacon out of it.

Actually, Huck, your perspective, even allowing for hyperbole, is not far from that of the loony animal rights crowd: Woods = home for animals; man = intruder; ergo, man attacked by animals in woods is to be expected. Silly.

But to follow it out: Why shouldn't we put mountain lions in the woods at High Point? We put wolves back in Yellowstone, and mountain lions were in your neighborhood long before you were. Why should NJ's wild animals be cooped up at Space Farms in nearby Beemerville? We should let 'em loose in Huck's neighborhood, and anyone who gets nicked took the risk when they got off the Barcalounger.

I'm starting to get the hang of your argument, Huck.

I know bears bruminate. They can be awakened readily.

The Indians and early settlers would locate a bruminating bear, stir it up with a stick, then kill it when it came out of wherever it was wintering.

I can't tell if you're purposely twisting things around, or if you're just warped.

Actually, Huck, your perspective, even allowing for hyperbole, is not far from that of the loony animal rights crowd: Woods = home for animals;

So now it's loony to say bears shit in the woods? You're funny.

ergo, man attacked by animals in woods is to be expected.

OK, so you advocate controlling the bear population because you DON'T expect run-ins with bears? You're losing me, here. When I go camping where I know there might be bears, I do things a certain way. I would have figgered SCOUTS would, too. But I guess if folks like you are teaching scouts, you're telling them NOT to expect bears??

But to follow it out: Why shouldn't we put mountain lions in the woods at High Point?

LOL. How is that following it out? To continue your thought, why not stock Central Park with spider monkeys? How about rabbits with pancakes on their head?

Why should NJ's wild animals be cooped up at Space Farms in nearby Beemerville? We should let 'em loose

Yes, it logically follows that if you believe scouts camping in bear country should be prepared for possible encounters, that you must also believe that ZOOS SHOULD BE OUTLAWED! You're logic is amazing!! You should write for the Weekly World News!

I'm starting to get the hang of your argument, Huck.

Yeah, well, mine's boring and dull compared to YOURS!
