Sub plagued by glitches after handover (Canadian Forces)

HALIFAX--When HMCS Chicoutimi was handed over to the Canadian navy in October, the submarine had trouble drawing in fresh air, could not dive to certain depths and suffered from computer bugs, according to newly released documents.

Telex messages between the ill-fated warship and navy headquarters in Ottawa, obtained by the Canadian Press under the Access to Information Act, reveal a litany of problems, including:

- The used vessel could not "snort" - the navy's term for drawing in fresh air while traveling at full power just below the ocean surface during an emergency.

- The warship could not dive to it's maximum depth because rust had rendered portions of its pressure hull vulnerable to collapse.

- Software glitches prevented the sub's autopilot from functioning.

The revelations raise questions about whether the submarine, which was the scene of a deadly fire Oct. 5, was ready for it's maiden voyage to Canada.

Among naval vessels, a submarine is the least-tolerant to heavy use and is the most intolerant of poor maintenance.

A rusted pressure hull and "software glitches" should have warned the Canadian Navy against this purchase.

Please don't take it out on the poor canadian troops.They are very brave and so unsupported.They have such poor equipment their lives are more endangered by using the equipment,ie helicopters,poorly armored vehicles etc.
When they were sent to Afghanistan the Canadian brass send them with the green camo outfit,because that is the stuff they had ordered. The soldiers had to put glue on their uniform and stick sand on them to try and get some kind of protection.
When the US military wanted to award a canadian unit of snipers some medals, our government prohibited them from getting those.
Canada used to have a proud military but the canadian government has been taken over by extreme leftists that do not reflect the majority of the canadian public's opinion. Hopefully we'll be able to regain our country like you did,but we'll need american conservative support.

This is true, but we are not likely to change your government for you (regardless of what the leftists think of us). So you will have to do it yourselves. The first thing you have to do is figure out what it is that you want. Canadian policy has been so conflicted over the recient years that Americans can never be sure just where you stand - Other than increasingly in oposition to the US. Even Canadian authorities are scared to death of your imigration policy, but apparently powerless to change it. This presents a problem for the US. With the longest unguarded border in the world we rely on trust. The sad bit about this, is the US would have given Canada subs, (there were several stricken from active dute in the US Navy in the last couple years), but it was important for your government not to accept anything American.

About the subs,there are different stories about why we got the British ones, but I'm sure some politician being paid off was the determining factor. As to our foreign policy,it was hi jacked by the last PM that had some anti american extreme bias, I think to score points with the french province of Quebec. The conservative voices come from the West,and also from the business community,because Canada is the US largest trading partner.So keeping borders safe and monitoring them is advantageous to all. Actually,i think you would find also if you talk to field people from FBI or our RCMP, there is a lot of very good cooperation, collaboration. The problem is at the political levels.
