Washington State Governor's Race--Certification (Live Thread)(Rossi (R) wins by 261 votes!)
Washington State Secretary of State ^ | 11/17/2004 | The Conservator

Posted on 11/17/2004 4:44:42 PM PST by TheConservator

This is a LIVE THREAD for discussion of the impending certification of final results in the Washington State Governor's race, between Dino Rossi (R) and Christine Gregoire (D).

The Secretary of State is required to certify the final results this evening. As of 4:28 P.M. PST, Gregoire leads by 29 votes with 2521 votes from 4 or 5 counties left to be reported. King County (the Dem's stronghold) has apparently made its final report.

Washington State law requires a machine recount if the certified results show a difference of less than 2000, which now seems almost certain. It also requires a manual recount if the difference is less than 150 votes. A machine recount is estimated to take a week, a hand recount a month or more.

If the final result were a tie, the winner would be decided by lot.

Sigh....Sometimes I sure feel like it! Living in the burbs it's a little better than in downtown Seattle. Especially where I live (Issaquah) - -Rossi was our State Senator, so more support up here for him than in Downtown Liberal Land.

They also were doing it in King County, Scott, after a judge said it was legal for the rats to do it. The real issue is that in a different county, it was NOT allowed, so that brings up as I said a "Florida-style" Equal Protection case...

I know what the issue was. But once the judge had issued his ruling, the Republicans should have gotten those names and hit the pavement, even as they appealed the order.

I'm watching from the Blue Lagoon. Brooke just won't leave me alone.

Actually, that's just where I am right now. My butt is in my office chair, but I just let it do its own thing.

"The issue was one of matching signatures. The elections office did not count ballots where the signature didn't match the voter registration card. The Dems argued that as long as the affidavit matched the ballot the signature on the voter registration didn't matter. The judge agreed. I think the GOP is appealing."

If I understand this correctly, the judge thereby approved ballots from unregistered voters - is that correct?

I was thinking they do. My pet peeve is that all states don't require ID for registrations AND for voting.

remember that while benton is listing 750 and grays harbor 1221, earlier in the evening Whitman and Franklin listed 250 each. But the real numbers were 432 in Whitman and 367 in Franklin. The percentages didn't change much and neither did the numbers. We'd have to see some pretty drastic !@#$ here to sway this in Gregoire's favor.

If they were unregistered, they wouldn't have received a ballot in the first place so no, that isn't the case.

The GH site just updated. so i compared their numbers from yesterday to today. it was more than the 1,221 estimated ballots they had left. it was almost 2,000 ballots.
but it nets 87 for gregoire so not counting benton rossi will be ahead by 5 votes!

He was talking about the provisional and absentee ballots that have already been cast in those counties. He gave the impression that he expects the remaining outstanding ballots to be consistant with those numbers.
