Washington State Governor's Race--Certification (Live Thread)(Rossi (R) wins by 261 votes!)
Washington State Secretary of State ^ | 11/17/2004 | The Conservator

Posted on 11/17/2004 4:44:42 PM PST by TheConservator

This is a LIVE THREAD for discussion of the impending certification of final results in the Washington State Governor's race, between Dino Rossi (R) and Christine Gregoire (D).

The Secretary of State is required to certify the final results this evening. As of 4:28 P.M. PST, Gregoire leads by 29 votes with 2521 votes from 4 or 5 counties left to be reported. King County (the Dem's stronghold) has apparently made its final report.

Washington State law requires a machine recount if the certified results show a difference of less than 2000, which now seems almost certain. It also requires a manual recount if the difference is less than 150 votes. A machine recount is estimated to take a week, a hand recount a month or more.

If the final result were a tie, the winner would be decided by lot.

Sam Reed says Benton Harbor votes are averaging 2/1 for Rossi and Grays Harbor votes are averaging a little over 50% for Rossi.

Oh geez - Recount: in punch card counties - chads will fall out that didn't fall out before and in optical scan counties, marks may be picked up that weren't picked up before. Now we're going to have to determine which county votes which way arggggggggghhhhhhhh!

The issue was one of matching signatures. The elections office did not count ballots where the signature didn't match the voter registration card. The Dems argued that as long as the affidavit matched the ballot the signature on the voter registration didn't matter. The judge agreed. I think the GOP is appealing.

"Sam Reed says Benton Harbor votes are averaging 2/1 for Rossi and Grays Harbor votes are averaging a little over 50% for Rossi."

Is he talking about the votes being counted today, or about the votes that were previously tabulated?

And the Republicans didn't do the same thing?

The Republicans did do the same thing in Yakima County and the Judge there would not allow those votes to be counted.

It has set up a case where the counties are allowing ballots differently, and gives Pubs a basis to have thier votes counted or the King County votes voided. Either scenario nets Rossi approx 400-600 votes.

That's not the issue. If Republicans didn't get the names in King County where they knew they could get them, and do the same thing as the Democrats in King County where they knew they could do it, then they're idiots, whatever they might have been doing in Yakima.

There are still 1971 outstanding ballots in 2 counties left to be counted. Rossi will win by 289 before the recount.
