WASHINGTON (AP) -- Senate Republicans on Wednesday narrowly chose North Carolina Sen. Elizabeth Dole to lead their campaign operations for 2006.
The race for chairing the National Republican Senatorial Committee pit Dole, a familiar face who led the Red Cross and is married to former Sen. Bob Dole of Kansas, against Sen. Norm Coleman of Minnesota, an energetic politician who defeated former Vice President Walter Mondale in 2002. Both are first term-senators.
Dole, 68, won the job after getting 28 votes to 27 votes for Coleman in a caucus of GOP senators and senators-elect.
Supporters of Coleman, 55, argued that, as a native New Yorker who won in a Democratic-leaning state, his appeal across party lines could help Republicans win Senate battleground states in 2006.
Dole's supporters said she would help Republicans win over female and minority voters by putting a "different face on the party."
As the new chairwoman, Dole will be responsible for raising money and recruiting candidates for the party in the 2006 Senate races. She also becomes part of the GOP Senate leadership team.
Virginia Sen. George Allen, who publicly backed Dole, is stepping down as the committee chairman after two years. In the 2004 election, the GOP expanded its Senate majority by four seats.
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has chosen New York Sen. Chuck Schumer as its new chairman.
LOL!
When I see Dole..I still automatically think Bob.
Bob and Britney in that Viagra commercial.
This was a great move for the NRSC. Senator Dole is an INSTANT fundraiser no matter where she goes. I think Norm Coleman is great, but he's someone only "Inside Baseball" folks really know.
Coleman is doing an oustanding job with the OFF investigation! Kudos to him!
W stands for Women!
Yep....she's a keeper for such things. Many of the deep pockets won't even care if she picks them clean, cuz she is ever-so-charming while doing it!
Bob Dole and Britney were in a Pepsi commercial together. The two of them in a Viagra commercial would just be really disturbing!
I like her. She sometimes comes across a bit RINOish, but she is pro-life and has an 80 rating from ACU, not too shabby.
Freudian slip?
Britney Spears has an 80 rating from the ACU?
Ooops!
I could have sworn it was in a Viagra commercial.
I thought the Jews controlled the world . . . Poor Norm. I like him a lot more than RoboLiddy. But she does draw a crowd. When she was running for Senate, she did an event at my old law firm. It was a pretty liberal place, but she filled a good-sized room on short notice with maxed out donors, and then bored us all to tears with her stump speech.
She's definitely a bit of a RINO....and....dare I say it....has oatmeal for brains. But heck, she's enough southern to make a snake walk.....backwards......
She was here in OK raising money for Dr. Coburn and she sure did open some pockets -- she was everyplace this fall raising money and supporting Senate candidates. Really like Coleman too -- we couldn't go wrong with either one IMO.
I'm a Coleman fan myself but heading the OFF hearings looks like it may be a full time job. I am proud of him.
She has a lot of experience at fund raising with the Red Cross.
I have a feeling that Coleman will get his share of "plum" assignments.
How is Coleman on the social issues? Liberal like Giuliani, or more reasonable?
This is "Seat Belt" Dole, right?
"How is Coleman on the social issues?"
I suspect that misguided sentiment has long since evaporated.
Coleman and Lindsey Graham were the the workhorses of that this-isn't-a-filibuster filibuster awhile back. They were the ones who kept it going while others were sleeping. I heard him speak a couple of times. A likeable, sensible fellow, I thought.
