POLICE CLASH WITH PROTESTORS OUTSIDE U.S. EMBASSY DURING GREEK ANTI-WAR RALLY (EUROTRASH ALERT!)

ATHENS (AP) - Police fired tear gas at demonstrators who hurled rocks and bottles at the U.S. Embassy in Athens on Wednesday during a rally against the war in Iraq

Dozens of youths wearing scarves and crash helmets clashed with riot police. At least 25 were detained, police said. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

A downtown branch of Citibank was damaged by a firebomb, while protesters set fire to trash bins near the embassy. Two other Greek banks sustained damage.

The rioters, who also scuffled with rival groups of demonstrators, broke off from a peaceful protest by about 10,000 people.

Chanting "American killers," protesters carried empty white coffins daubed with red Arabic writing to voice their objection to the war in Iraq. They also unfurled a large banner that read "Hands off Fallujah," the central Iraqi city where U.S. forces are battling insurgents.

More than 6,000 police were deployed around the city and a helicopter circled overhead as the marchers gathered outside the embassy, which was barricaded by riot police buses.

Wednesday's protest came during an annual rally to mark the anniversary of a bloody student revolt in 1973 against the military dictatorship in Greece.

It marked the 31st anniversary of the student uprising at the Athens Polytechnic that helped bring down military rulers who held power between 1967 and 1974 and received support from the United States.

At least 20 people - possibly many more - are believed to have died and hundreds were injured when tanks and soldiers were used to put down the pro-democracy protests.

That's the greek pasok commies. You can find their graffiti all over Greek cities. They do not represent popular sentiment. More like disaffected youth.

Yes. It appears Citibank has been targeted in two different countries within a few hours of one another. I wonder what security precautions Citibank is enacting, even though this is probably just a coincidence...

HMMMM - Isn't Citibank one of the banks targeted in NYC a couple of months ago during the election? They just lowered the terror alert level for them here.

Not anti-War then. Just pro Islamic death camp.

"More than 6,000 police were deployed around the city..."

Those protesters should be happy I was not among those 6,000 policemen/women. I shudder at the thought of what I would do to one of those Islamo-Fascist loving losers if I had an anodized steel baton, shield, and the potential to bash in skulls...

The rational folk at Indy have been irritated with Citibank in Argentina for a while:

Action at Citibank
by Crazy Jeff Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002 at 10:15 AM

Citibank is a leading financer of forest destruction. Today activists shut them down at several downtown SF locations.

More will be posted here soon ... including video clips and so forth.

But here is the deal so far ... There were four downtown banks that were targetted by forest activists for nonviolent civil-disobedience to draw attention to Citibanks destructive investments and partnerships. There were five different affinity action teams and several were arrested. One team may be given felony "property destruction" charges. Please check back on this for updates later and also look at the Rainforest Action Network's site for background information on Citibank's history of misguided investing. Todays actions here were in solidarity with activists in Equador who are protesting Citibank's investment in oil projects on indigenous and pristine lands there.

Which just goes to prove none of these rioters were planning on getting mortgages any time soon.

Most of Greece's baseball teams were staffed by Greek American/Canadians and that was about it.
