Bested by a Republican campaign emphasizing Christian faith, some Democrats are scrambling to shake off their secular image, stepping up efforts to organize the "religious left" and debating changes to how they approach the cultural flashpoints of same-sex marriage and abortion.
Some call the election a warning. "You can't have everybody who goes to church vote Republican; you just can't," Al From, founder of the Democratic Leadership Council, said last week at a forum on the election.
Religious traditionalists including Dr. Richard Land, president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the conservative Southern Baptist Convention, and Jim Wallis of the liberal evangelical group Sojourners say Democratic officials are calling them for advice on reaching conservative Christians. And they and some other theologically orthodox supporters of Mr. Bush say it may not take much for Democrats to make inroads among their constituency, if the party demonstrates a greater friendliness to religious beliefs and even modestly softens its support for abortion rights.
"It would not be hard," said the Rev. Richard John Neuhaus, editor of the journal First Things and a conservative Catholic who has advised Mr. Bush on how to handle the issue of abortion.
But Democrats disagree about how to establish the party's spiritual credentials.

The democrats put on their 'principles' like they put on a cheap coat of paint.
That paint smells bad, and is gonna flake, fade, and peel.
Like shooting fish in a barrel.
I almost feel guilty, they're that easy to anticipate.
"OK, I know, I know...'it's not a theory, it's fact'!"
Well it is, and they haven't even begun to get cranked with the reinvention of themselves.
"Hmmmmmm...maybe we should call it 'Landru's Law'"?
Sounds great!!
Maybe even a *TV* series?
...seated right next to Sybil the Soothsayer. {g}
"Can I get me some religion here?"
You are correct...
Won't ever work. Democrats really push the "Big Tent" concept. That will never appeal to conservative evangelicals. The Republican party needs to remember this, in that many "moderates" are crying for a "Big Tent" in the Republican party.
All big tents are good for are circuses. If you make a political party a big tent that is exactly what you get - a circus.
Notice that, as the MSM attempts to explain their losses, they invariably discuss how the country has "moved to the Right". The never mention how the Democrat Party has moved to the far Left. Thus they still don't understand what has been happening.
With their grip on public communication weakening by the day, their old strategies (obfuscation, demagoguery) are no longer working. They are like the proverbial buggy whip manufacturer who never grasped the impact of the automobile.
Plus, in the modern age of mass media marketing, they seem to think that they can just go to the makeup room and put some "religion" makeup on, and then things will be as they always were.
These folks are losers going down the tubes right before our collective eyes. Life is getting better every day.
WoW!! That's great.
I can see an opportunity here.
Tell all them RATS to come on down to Dudesdad's
Religion Store. I can sell them some.
It will be so easy to hoodwink this group because none of them can recognize religion. I can sell them anything as long as I call it religion.
I can see the money pouring in now.
The Dems would be smart just not being so pro-abort. Get rid of Roe and abortion becomes much less a national issue.
Sorry .. sorry .. I'll try to keep it down!!
It'll cost 'em the remainder of their base.
They'll be ordering several thousand Bill Clinton king size Bibles with Holy Bible written on both front and back covers in the optional 2 inch high gold leaf letters that will show up in pictures taken a mile away.
Of course the Democrats problem is that, like with guns, when they go on public relations photo shoots, the Democrats really don't mean it, and everyone knows it!
LOL... Well done.
What is the problem? Just LIE, like you always do!
Sincerity is very important. If democRats can fake that, the rest is easier.
The DemocRATs are obviously not Calvinists.
