Since a dirty bomb would probably be used to cause the maximum damage possible and that would be in a major population center you merely have to not live in places like NY or DC or downwind of the same.

Prayer. Lots and lots of prayer.

Actually, the dirty bomb is not deadly beyond the conventional blast radius.

By having a BIIIGGGG Bath Tub.

Unless you mean the other kind of dirty bomb; in that case, just cover the children's eyes.

The only damage is from the initial conventional explosive blast. The rest is due to ignorant panic.

A dirty bomb is not what you meant. You are talking about a chemical or biological attack. A dirty bomb has to do with some sort of nuclear material like enriched uranium or any other hazardous radioactive material or waste combine that with explosives to spread the radiation and you have a dirty bomb. A dirty bomb will have a more emotional reaction than a physical. You can clean yourself from radiation and unless you ingest it in fatal quantities you can live through it.

You live in a rural area. Don't worry, be happy.

Thanks for the information. I guess not having to face a nuclear threat is a pretty good trade off for having to drive 12 miles to the nearest fast food restaurant and 40 miles to the movie theater. ;^)

Enriched urarium is no more hazardous than natural uranium or the depleted uranium used in sailboat keels and for armor-penetrating rounds.

Duck and cover.

Actually duct tape and covers for your windows and doors. You need to seal yourself into your house or apartment. Best if you can filter the air coming in and keep the inside pressure higher, if only a tad, than the outside. This can be done with a pump made from a cardboard box, plastic sheeting, and of course, duct taep. Toilet paper rolls make great filters. You arrange for the air to sucked edgewise, plugging the holes in the role. Putting the roll in a large juice or soup stock can is one way to do that, See the appendix to "Pulling Through" by Dean Ing.. Read the book too, as it explains how to use all that stuff. Dealing with a dirty bomb is pretty much the same as dealing with fallout from a nuclear bomb. Some of the mesures will help agaist other WMDs as well, although if it's gas you don't want to be pumping it in to your house, and the filter won't take it out, so you have to just keep sealed up, fortunatly not for so long as with a dirty bomb or a real live nuke.

I live in a rather large city,,,a crop duster flying over spraying liquid would not be in the air for long, IMHO

Long enough. In most places it would take longer to scramble fighters and have them get there, or get the local guard unit to bring out some Stingers, than it would for the guy to empty his tanks. Besides, with Jihadies, the pilot would probably crash the aircraft into the juciest target he could find as soon as the spray tanks went dry. Or consider that the target might be a sporting event, say a college or pro football game. That way he could spray first and crash later, all in the same place. The airspace over such events is restricted, but like gun control laws, such restrictions aren't going to stop the bad guys, unless the authorities can react quicker than I suspect they can in most places.

The so-called terrorists want us to be afraid. But we can change the game, if we wish -- starting with you and me, brother, and the other free people of the world.

We are their worst nightmare. And we've just started to deliver that message.

Potassium Iodide is poor for nuke waste, calcium supplements are much better to block strontium uptake. Radioactive iodine is a byproduct of meltdowns not nukes. Many Bio-agents are succeptable to Doxycycline, get some. Bio agents, unless infective are pretty bogus for attacking as sunlight kills them, and the infective ones are of dubious use as bio agents cant read maps and don't stop at state lines. Mother nature has been trying to kill us off for generations with bio-agents, we have a pretty good built in bio-agent defense system. A crop duster would most likely be used for chemical agents. Chemical agents are of limited use, just think, we use chemical agents to spray crops and cover only a few acres a load. Nerve agents are the best, they are insecicide tuned for people. However it is pretty hard to get the dosage right, too much and you reduce coverage, not enough and you don't kill. And it is pretty much what we spray from crop dusters. All chemical agents are made heavier than air to keep them from dispersing before they do their deed. So if in the city, go up a floor and you will reduce your dosage by 10 to 1. The winds down city streets with the buildings acting like stiring vanes will pretty much break up a gas attack, the only danger is dust attacks so if you are seriously paranoid, carry a dust mask in your pocket. In short, if you see a crop duster spraying the city, go up and breath through your t-shirt. Pop a doxycycline once a day for a week. As for a dirty bomb, if you are right in the middle of it, breath through your shirt as you leave. Dirty bombs are only harmful if you get some of the radioactive material stuck in your lung. Or if you decide to camp out there for a few weeks. Only particles of a certain size get stuck in lungs. 99.99% of them just get coughed out. So dirty bombs are a ecological problem, not a real human one. They are highly over rated. Chem and Bio are over rated, but dirty bombs are a joke. Unless of course you have one in your pocket when it goes off. That could hurt. Terrorism is all about terror. It is not very effective in reality. For instance, in Israel where I am currently living we get around 10 to 15 terror attacks a day. When all is said and done, more people still die from traffic accidents than from terrorists. Think about that. That is about it.

The first thing you do w/a radioactive incident is turn off the AC/heat. Run/keep water and wait it out. Previous posters have all the details. I have a well system, so water contamination won't be a problem, but city dwellers should be prepared!
