In response to a recent story about a stolen crop duster, I posed the following questions. Not one FR gave a response. So, since I feel that information of this sort should be exchanged, I post my first (and only) vanity.

Okay, for us security moms, need some answers:

1. What biological agent can be dispersed from a crop duster?

2. What is the span, or how much land can a crop duster "dust" in one flight (presume it would pretty much be shot down)?

3. Does weather play a factor? I mean, does the biological agent only "work" above 50 degrees?

4. What precautions can/should be taken? Should we keep gas masks in the basement?

Bottom line, what can we anticipate the danger to be and how can we prepare for it, we being the average family?

Any info you can give is much appreciated. I just can't sit by and wait and see what happens. I would like to make some sort of precautionary measures at home and I feel like ther's nothing I can do.

You do realize that comprehensive answers to your questions would aid the terrorists much more than it would help you?
Find a technical friend (scientist, engineer, chemist) and you can probably get all the answers you need.

Say --- your name wouldn't be Achmed, would it?

Go back in time seven years or so and start preparing for Y2K. Then keep the survivalist mentality in perpetuity after those concerns have come and gone. At least that's what our fam has done.

Not in the very least. In the Cold War, you build bomb shelters and got gas masks. It's an important enough question. I'm a conservative body and soul. I worked the polls here in Wisconsin for Bush from 5 a.m. until midnight. My intention is purely to get some advice. This most likely will be useless information as I faith in our leaders, but there has to be some practical thoughts on this matter.

Odds are a single family would not be attacked in such a way. One crop duster wouldn't do much damage over the entire US.

You live in Wisconsin? If so,I would not worry about it too much. Why don't you write your own Governor and/or state officials and ask them your questions?

There really aren't many clear-cut answers to your questions....

Not all biologicals can be aerosolized...at least not in a volume that makes them portable in a crop duster...

I think there numerous agencies working on this issue right now. Our company does research in the area of biological detectors using DNA.

There are other agencies and programs working on counterdefenses to aerosols and topical exposures through air and HVAC systems....

Our family has a philosophy that we live our life as safely as we can and try to stay as aware as we can. I live in a rather large city,,,a crop duster flying over spraying liquid would not be in the air for long, IMHO. However, anything is possible. I think the odds are other things may kill us first. I'm not so sure I'd want to stay around after such an event if everything in the landscape has been contaminated. What kind of life is that?

It's a difficult question and it's not wrong to think about it.
