NBC Reporter Declines Al-Jazeera 'Best Video' Award

NBC News reporter Kevin Sites today declined to accept Al-Jazeera's Best News Video Award for 2004, insisting that there are many reporters who deserve the recognition, and that he just "happened to be in the right place at the right time."

Mr. Sites chalked it up to "dumb luck" that he was able to record a U.S. Marine shooting a captured terrorist in the mosque which the terrorist had used as a battle station during his fight against American forces.

"I'm no hero," Mr. Sites said. "The real heroes are the executives at NBC News who had the guts to show my video over and over, even after all the heat they took for refusing to show footage of terrorists beheading innocent American civilians. I think that speaks volumes about their character and professionalism."

An Al-Jazeera spokesman said Mr. Sites and NBC have used their art to "advance the cause of freedom in a fashion reminiscent of Michael Moore."

Like Rush said today, President Bush should give this soldier a medal at the white House!

I agree - Sites' blog ( http://www.kevinsites.net/ ) appears to be very supportive of the Marines with whom he is embedded - unfortunately, the anchors at NBC and Al-Jazeera don't share his support.

If Sites is so supportive of the Marines, why did he shoot this tape and send it in? He couldn't be that dense and not know that they would use it against our troops. He had the option to not record the incident. I say, get the media out of there. They're only putting our troops in danger. I don't think any of us would want a camera following us around while we're trying to stay alive and fight a war against insane zealots.

This guy Sites is from Pismo Beach CA and is a Cal Poly grad..(yep same college Laci and Scott Peterson went to).
I am really angry at this whole thing...the MSM had the Marines condemned and they don't even know what went on..

I read that Sites was removed from covering that group of Marines..smart move...they would not go out of the way to harm him but I bet they wouldn't be too eager to help him after this...

Bout time the Pentagon reviews the credentials of all the so called embeds and maybe get them out.

While Mr. Sites may be supportive, the Editors are not. Regardless of his supportive feelings, though, Sites is there to make a living as a freelancer. He has shot much more footage than this, and I'm sure he sends it all in to be parsed for inclusion, since he only gets paid for what they use. Normally, the news editors pick and choose - out of thousands of hours of video - that which they will use. In this case, they were looking for something to incriminate, and they believed they found it in this video.

In this case, regardless of Mr. Sites supportiveness, I'm with you regarding the embedding of reporters in close battle - NBC's and Al-Jazeera's editors have used this to deliberately damage American Marines, and put them in danger. They are using it to aid and comfort the enemy - and so, if possible, we should deny them that ability.

Like all good humor, it has it's roots in truth.

We can all imagine it to be true.

An outstanding satire has you going with it for at least a moment before the bs/humor light comes on. This was excellent.
