November 12, 2004 - You can't grow up in North Carolina without being subjected to endless reruns of The Andy Griffith Show. Though the show was a bit harder to find once I moved to San Francisco, I still made a point of seeking out the reruns wherever I could find them. The nostalgic show, produced by Sheldon Leonard and Danny Thomas, looks back to an idealized time and place that never really existed. The popularity of the show lasted a full eight seasons and it was, along with I Love Lucy and Seinfeld, one of the few shows to ever end its run while still at the top of the Nielsen ratings. Though the show has thrived in syndication ever since it went off the air (or morphed into the decidedly unfunny Mayberry R.F.D.), fans have long been waiting for a comprehensive DVD version of the show. Thankfully, Paramount has finally consented to release the entire first season in a remastered DVD format, available November 16.

That was a good movie.
Frankly, if they will just come out with DVD of the shows up until Don Knotts left I'll buy it. Once he was gone the show lost its soul.
Yes, I had several universal insights that I can't recall right now.
That's the stuff. When it went in syndication, they often cut the final scene, so they could jam in another commercial.
The interesting thing to me is there is an old ragged sticker on the case which says. "Property of Andy and Cindi Griffith, 10500 Camarillo Street, N. Hollywood, CA 91602"
The binocular is not particularly expensive so he probably put these on all his property.
No argument there. The show also lost it's best writers, switched to color and brought in some unfunny characters--Howard Sprague anyone?
Yep. They also cut off a chunk from the beginning of most episodes. These were often the best parts!
I don't watch the color episodes, although I seem to remember the one where Andy visits Barney in Raleigh and Barney's landlady is head of a burglary ring was pretty funny.
My favorite episode is the one about Opie and the spoiled kid.
How does one find these old movies?
The theme song alone sums up life for me. And I'm a D@mn Yankee! LOL!
"The Fishin' Hole"
By: "Everett Sloane, Earle Hagen and Herbert Spencer"
Well, now, take down your fishin' pole and meet me at The Fishin' Hole.
We may not get a bite all day, but don't you rush away.
What a great place to rest your bones and mighty fine for skippin' stones,
You'll feel fresh as a lemonade, a-settin' in the shade.
Whether it's hot,
whether it's cool,
oh what a spot,
for whistlin' like a fool.
What a fine day to take a stroll and wander by The Fishin' Hole.
I can't think of a better way to pass the time o' day.
We'll have no need to call the roll when we get to The Fishin' Hole.
There'll be you, me, and Old Dog Trey, to doodle time away.
If we don't hook a perch or bass, we'll cool our toes in dewy grass,
Or else pull up a weed to chaw, and maybe set and jaw.
Hangin' around,
takin' our ease,
watchin' that hound,
a-scratchin' at his fleas.
Come on, take down your fishin' pole and meet me at The Fishin' Hole.
I can't think of a better way to pass the time o' day.
Amen! (I added that, LOL!) Andy couldn't have been a Marxist. This day, as described above, seems like Heaven to me!
And FWIW, I'm naming my next mutt "Trey."
I caught it on AMC or TCM. You may be able to order it at Blockbusters.
The one you're talking about, where Andy goes to Raleigh--that was unusually funny for a color episode.
You like "Opie and the Spoiled Kid"? It's okay, but that spoiled kid, Arnold, is such a snot ... (Trivia note, the boy that played Arnold was also in the "Rimshaw House" episode. He and Opie were playing ball and knocked a hole in the window.)
Thelma Lou was barney's "squeeze"
But he made several (six?) guest roles - believe he won an Emmy for the Russian Summit episode.
I read somewhere that Don quit, because he thought Andy was done.
As a kid, TAGS and MASH were staples of staying home sick.
That's a good one. I also like the one where Barbara Eden comes to town as the manicurist.
I highly recommend the Dick Van Dyke show DVDs. There are 5 seasons..very good!
