November 12, 2004 - You can't grow up in North Carolina without being subjected to endless reruns of The Andy Griffith Show. Though the show was a bit harder to find once I moved to San Francisco, I still made a point of seeking out the reruns wherever I could find them. The nostalgic show, produced by Sheldon Leonard and Danny Thomas, looks back to an idealized time and place that never really existed. The popularity of the show lasted a full eight seasons and it was, along with I Love Lucy and Seinfeld, one of the few shows to ever end its run while still at the top of the Nielsen ratings. Though the show has thrived in syndication ever since it went off the air (or morphed into the decidedly unfunny Mayberry R.F.D.), fans have long been waiting for a comprehensive DVD version of the show. Thankfully, Paramount has finally consented to release the entire first season in a remastered DVD format, available November 16.

Just think, Jonny...if they made "The Fortune Cookie" now they could keep the CBS connection. Walter Matthau could represent Dan Rather!!!

Yeah, I saw "The Getaway". Another great movie. Sprague was a vetinarian and the bank robber, who'd been shot, orders him at gun point to remove the bullet.

Mayberry has the lowest crime rate in the state. Barney is asked "How many are on the Mayberry police force?" "Well, there's Andy and me - and Baby makes three!"

Hellooooooo, doll!

Yeah, I used to associate a whiskey/cigarette voice with "The Fun Girls". Now, I associate it with Susan Estrich. NOT an improvement.

Okay, but do you like Andy in any of his bad guy roles? "Murder In Coweta County" for example.

Alright. You win. Ritter was surprising effective (and affective) in "Sling Blade." Man, I need to get a life! LOL!

"Sling Blade"--another great movie. I almost didn't recognize Ritter the first time I saw it. It wasn't until he and Billy Bob (Karl) were in the restaraunt that I looked past that weird hair-do and saw his face.

Karl: "Not funny ha-ha, funny queer."

The Jump the Shark moment for the Andy Griffith show was when they went to color.

I'm getting all nostalgic hearing about everyone's favorite episodes. I have three, because I can't possibly choose just one.

Barney in the choir is an alltime classic. One of the funniest things EVER on television.

Aunt Bea on the pickle-making binge was hilarious, too. In my mind's eye, I can still see Barney stopping cars heading out of town, and making them take a jar of pickles with them.

Another Aunt Bea classic moment was when the elixir salesman came to town, and the whole Ladies Aid Society got plowed in the parlor.

They just don't make em like that anymore.

My favorite episode is "Barney's first car". Barney takes his life savings ($321.00) and buys his first car from a little old lady. The lady turns out to be the head of a car theft ring and the car turns out to be a lemon.

Also the little lady was played by Ellen Corby, the Grandma on the Waltons.

I don't think TAGS ever really jumped the shark although it did decline some in the last year or so.

BTW I agree with those who thought Miss Crump was a shrew. She probably was ok in real life but I never did warm up to the character. Also agree that Miss Ellie was the toughest girlfriend although Peggy wasn't bad.

That was a big part of it, but the death knell came when "Emmett The Fix-It Man" joined the cast. Ugh. If that poor guy ever had a funny scene I never saw it.
