SACRAMENTO Since his inauguration nearly a year ago, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has rallied U.S. troops in Germany, attended a state funeral in Austria, dined with the king of Jordan at his palace, toured ancient sites in Israel and joked with the Japanese prime minister in Tokyo.
But there is one conspicuous omission from his foreign sojourns: Mexico.
--snip--
Although his films have been popular in Mexico, Schwarzenegger's political views have been derided there. For a year, Mexican media have hammered the governor for opposing driver's licenses for illegal immigrants in California, and the issue has reverberated throughout the country.
--snip--
"It's very discouraging," said Guadalupe Gomez, a Santa Ana accountant who advises Mexico's foreign ministry on issues affecting Mexicans abroad. "The leaders of California and Mexico have a lot to discuss, not just on immigration but on trade, education and healthcare. Fox is looking at the relationship from a narrow, political viewpoint. He is missing opportunities."
As for Schwarzenegger, Gomez said, "you'd think that our governor would want to go down and look to improve economic ties with Mexico."
A lot of ordinary Mexicans think they know why Schwarzenegger has not visited them yet.
"It is clear that he has not come to Mexico because he is afraid," said Luis Galeana, 45, a street vendor who was walking past the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City last week. "He hates Mexican immigrants and treats them badly. He would not be well-received here."
"Better that he go back to Hollywood and stop trying to obstruct relations between Mexico and California," said Carlos Montesinos, a 30-year-old computer engineer.
During the recall campaign, Schwarzenegger hammered Davis for signing the bill allowing illegal immigrants to get licenses, --snip-- .. a major topic on conservative talk radio in California and in the Mexican media.

Poor Arnold.
He is hated by the radical Mexicans in Mexico and called a racist by them.
Here he is hated by those who hate any immigration and call him a pawn of the Mexicans.
When we want your opinion on the matter, Carlos, we'll let you over the border illegally and...oh, um...
No suprise in this trash from the Left Angeles Times...
They are, in standard fashion, PLAYING THE MEXICAN IMMIGRANT CARD on our Gov!!! Way to go MSM...you just cannot stand it that you are a dying breed, and that Conservatism is trumping you leftist fools. ...and Mexicans belong in Mexico...and now we have a Gov that is not PANDERING TO MEXICO FOR MONEY AND SUPPORT!!!
Choke on it!!!! :-)
gee! I thought Arnold was supposed to govern Kalifornia not Mexico!
It's amazing how the Mexican press has such strong opinions on California driver's licenses when their own driver licensing is a sad joke.
In what possible way could the two governments be intertwined? Mexico wants freebies for its citizens whether in mexico or California. And, they want the American govt. to pay for it.
Who cares about Mexico? Just seal the border.
Yep, that is the way to get him to see things your way. Nothing like Mexican Diplomacy!
"Presidential aides said Fox wanted to discuss the driver's license issue but was told there would be no concessions from Schwarzenegger"
Good there are no concessions because the majority of Californians reject granting Mexican citizens Licenses, which in effect is full citizenship amnesty along with open borders. A few years back Prop 187 passed with majority of vote to deny Mexican nationals from receiving tax funded services, similar to prop 200 in Az. In addition, the governor was elected by popular vote, while stopping the legalization of Mexican ID was a main issue on his platform. So what business does Fox have trying to subvert the democratic process?
Furthermore, what business does the leader of another country have on any internal affairs of this country?
The continued blatant attempts of subverting of our governmental processes and soverntery by the socicialist Mexican party should be obvious to all and a reason for outrage to those who cherish freedom and the democratic process, considering the long history of the American Revolution!
They haven't a scintilla of credibility.
And I say, "To HELL with Mexico!" I've gagged on the smog in TJ to help an orphanage, gnawed "chicken" in Ensenada, traveled through Baja, flown their airlines, been in La Paz, fought bugs in the interior, was trapped in Mexico City, climbed the pyramids (now with a Wal-Mart for Heaven's sake!), eyed the iguanas on the roadside from the bus, and nearly drowned in Acapulco. And yes, I did drink the water and regretted it.
Mexico is a third-world cesspool with a people too accepting of criminal enterprise and corruption, a venomous plan for Reconquista (retaking the Southwestern U.S. for Mexico), and a government which fights to export its own citizens! We shouldn't be invading Iraq, we should invade Mexico!
the fact that giving drivers licenses to illegal aliens is even considered is a very sad thing
Are you interested in running for Gov next election?
Should always finish your thoughts.<(¿)>
I am a lot more concerned with our elected officials that are openly and many secretly helping them. Remember Tancredo told us we would be surprised how many of his colleagues favored erasing all borders in the Americas
Yes, and elected officials who are in favor of legislative laws that take our way the legal US citizens democratic freedoms, by diluting our votes with the rest of the third world should be voted out of office!
bttt
"Here he is hated by those who hate any immigration"
I haven't noticed anyone who said they hate any immigration. Could you point that out? I see that most here don't want illegal aliens coming in millions unchecked with all the social services available to citizens. I'm sure you are for enforcing our immigration laws, Gramps.
