Within the past month, four former deputy directors of operations have tried to offer CIA Director Porter J. Goss advice about changing the clandestine service without setting off a rebellion, but Goss has declined to speak to any of them, said former CIA officials aware of the communications.
The four senior officials represent nearly two decades of experience leading the Directorate of Operations under both Republican and Democratic presidents. The officials were dismayed by the reaction and were concerned that Goss has isolated himself from the agency's senior staff, said former clandestine service officers aware of the offers.

The Plot To Hijack the CIA
Notice the sources for this story are not even "senior CIA officials" but "former" CIA officials supposedly familiar with the circumstances.
This could be anybody, from disgruntled Clintonoids to discredited Carterites.
If the Washington Post can't do any better than this, then Goss is obviously on the right track.
GO PORTER. Make the agency THE great asset for world peace once again.

If they are in fact almost 2-decade veterans, that means they joined up during the Reagan Administration, and they must have been a problem right along. Too bad Wm Casey died when he did. He would have cleaned out the bad hires in the analysis section once he had started seeing signs of disloyalty and liberal treachery. So these guys really must have got a free pass during the Bush I administration, before Woolsey could clean house, and then it appears they were PROMOTED all during the Xlinton administration... Then allowed to persist and fester under the "live & let live" benign laissez-faire policy of GBW, i.e., he ignored their legal breaches as a compassionate conservative as he let their patron angel...life-long democrat George Tenet... hold-over until August '04. Tenet MUST have been the one defending these cretins.
I believe that George Tenet was almost the death of GBW's presidency. If any body thinks he really was so loyal to GBW, explain all these traitors he did nothing about running around right under his nose.
I guess I am waiting for a defender of the "loyal Tenet" persuasion to explain how it was that he never warned the new administration, GWB, Condi Rice, Donald Rumsfeld, etc... about Al-Queada's Operation Bojinka (where they planned to use hijacked passenger jets as weapons to attack buildings in the U.S. back in '95! )
I never bought the line that he was "loyal" to GWB. His loyalty was to the Xlintons.

Senior personnel only means that they've been there longer than other staff members. It doesn't mean they are any better at the job. They would eventually be replaced by others moving up the career ladder anyway. I'm not sure if the CIA uses exams to promote individuals, but that really doesn't matter. I'm sure there are more than enough experienced individuals who can fill their positions. Sometimes when people are in a position too long, they become complacent and lazy. They just want to keep the status quo so they can make it to retirement without having to bust their hump anymore. Promoting new blood will be a plus because you can't teach an old dog new tricks.
Certainly not those who were hired during the Clinton terms, but those that were promoted via Tenet (Clinton's man), could definitely be in a position to be significant players.

Best I can tell is Porter Goss is trying to get rid of the East Coast/Ivy League/NYTimes types that are in leadership roles.
Goss is from Florida. GW is from Texas. The patriotic southerners and westerners will be put in charge. Get rid of the values neutral lawyer types that come out with mush like "one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter"
This purge looks like GW's vengeance on a disloyal CIA. A disloyal CIA that took it's gripes to the press and tried to sabotage Bush's re-election efforts.
Goss is trying to purge the CIA of those people who have been waging war against President Bush and the White House by making selective leaks to the press. These traitors in the CIA leaked to the press things during the campaign to get the Prez defeated and elect their fellow traitor, Kerry.
Goss is doing the right thing and these creeps are feeling the payback from the White House.
The President has to have complete faith in the intelligence community to protect us. He cannot tolerate an arrogant, disloyal CIA. Our lives depend on it.
The Washington Post and NYT and others are squealing like stuffed pigs because it looks like their "unnamed intelligence sources" are getting the ax (which they richly deserve).
Possible, but unlikely. Check out the names of the "journalists" responsible for this report. If their sources are getting the cold shoulder then Goss is doing good!
For an organization that prides itself on its' secrecy, there sure have been a lot of loose lips!
The DCI has little to do with promotions outside of the senior positions in the different Directorates. Besides, Tenet was never really Clinton's man. Clinton appointed him but their relationship was never that good. Until the last months of his tenure Tenet had a very good relationship with Bush.
