The "Lost Platoon" and the battle in the Ia Drang valley was an American military victory. Units from the Air Cav unknowingly discovered an NVA division while seeking to recover a platoon pinned down by insurgents. Ia Drang was a turning point. The NVA had a presence in SVN.
Air Cav prevailed over superior numbers. We suffered losses which were reported in the US press.
General Vo Nguyen Giap (Victor of Dien Bien Phu) recognized at that time that Americans could be defeated through the Press and its influence on the American populace.

The reunion was fantastic. The men are still vital and good looking! The wives are stoic and supportive.
If America could only realize that heroes walk among us every day, and give credit where credit is due...

I only read excerpts on the lost platoon, not sure where...
But that should have been more of the movie than it was. That story in itself was terrifying.

Interestng thought.
FYI, while in pre-production what later became known as "WE WERE SOLDIERS" was operating under the name...
.."The LOST PLATOON"
(as in "They're not lost, they're just surrounded")
.
