Bloomberg loves his little police state, doesn't he?

an undocumented alien with a tourist visa that expired more than three years ago, Brian

An illegal alien Irishman that hangs out in bars all the time? I don't know if the reporter just made him up, but if he's real he should be deported.

Yes it is a fookin' crime Brian. So is overstaying your visit on an expired tourist visa.

Seriously, these smoking bans don't do anyone any good besides the state. Make something illegal, then rake in the dough.

I smoke...and here in the rural red zone they have not gone to the nazi tactics of NYC, Chicago, SF (and other metro's). There are several food joints in town that have a smoking ban, and the only good lil' restaurant that ALLOWS smoking is my preference -and that of many others (good food, pleasant owners, etc..) despite being a little hole in the wall.

And they use real ashtrays -not saucers :)

"It's a fookin' crime," he said, "the way those bastards behave."

It's a fookin crime that he is still in this country. The INS couldn't find it's ass with both hands and a flashlight!

I just want to remind everyone: the ban is a STATE ban now. NYC could lift theirs, and it wouln't make a bit of difference. Smoking in bars is illegal all over NY State.

I make my living in the coin-op business. (think jukeboxes, pool tables, etc) and I expected to be out of a job a year ago because our collections dropped so low as a result of the ban. Fortunately, I am still working, but the writing is on the wall. We are down 2 employees already. The first bars to close were the ones that were hanging on by their fingernails already. Now we are seeing the previously prosperous joints start to fold up. I don't work in a bar, I don't own a bar, but my income has already been impacted by this ban, and soon, as a direct result, I will probably have NO income. But hey, it's for my own good, right?

It's not just in NYC, either.

I heard last night that a Pool Hall in Montgomery County, MD was closing because the smoking ban enacted by the County Council had taken away too much business.

Instead, though, the Pool Hall was going to expand in another location in the District of Columbia.

Interestingly, DC has not (yet) enacted a smoking ban.

In office buildings, the presence of a single squashed butt in a stairwell is taken as proof that law-breaking goes on, and the landlord is slapped with fines.

Cool! Just empty the butts from your ashtray into a plastic baggie and "plant" them in buildings and restaraunts all over NewYork. After enough hoity toity places get fined for "evidence" of "criminal" activity going on, some of the more well heeled might start to complain to the Boss - Mayor Bloomberg.
