The Shriver scenario isn't a precedent—that happened before the general election. The actual precedent wasn't set in 1972 but in 1872. Democratic candidate Horace Greeley died after the general election but before the electoral college met. When some of Greeley's electors voted for him anyway, the House simply discarded those votes. By default, that's what would happen in the Senate; any change from that opens the door to partisan rants from the Democrats.

Bush could select a replacement before the Electoral College met, but it's not quite that simple. The laws regarding electors vary state by state. Some states bind their electors to the party, which is the easiest answer—those electors would vote for Bush's selection. Some states bind their electors to the candidates, however, which means those votes would go for Cheney and be discarded. Other states allow electors to "vote their consciences," and there's no telling who those people would vote for. Some crackpot electors mgiht even switch their Bush votes to Kerry instead based on all this—there's apparently already one faithless Bush elector in West Virginia.

Let's hope and pray Cheney recovers and none of this will be necessary.

FoxNews just had an update, that Cheney is walking around to the tests.

It doesn't even faze me anymore. Not after I saw what heartless, Godless animals the DUpes truly are, after Ronald Reagan passed away:

My arm is fine. You see, in 2001, I was moving a load of things around at home. I was carrying something and bumped into a corner of a door. That spliced the radial nerve. ALL upper functions of my left arm stopped for 6 weeks. A hand brace allowed me to work. Nerves grow back at the pace of 1mm/day. I woke up one morning and everything just worked again. And I was very sore and took hydrocodone. And I got constipated from that drug. That stopped. A week later the World Trade Center towers got attacked.

I want to do 2001 over, with improvements:)

It was a long, tough campaign, months of it, full of invective and vicious sniping. It would take a toll on the healthiest of us. Let's hope and pray our favorite VP is okay.

You can easily tell the difference between people with class and gutter scum.

I hope the sensible DUers take a long hard look at their beloved forum and at least find themselves an alternative outlet. If freerepublic were like the DU I certainly wouldn't be here.

oh snugs I hope that he is ok. I just heard the news (Sunday morning here in Oz). For what I heard on the radio he decided to get to the hospital just to be sure it was nothing serious. Please let this be true!

When did you have your transplant? My brother-in-law had his in late 1995. We are enternally grateful to the family who donated his heart, and we are joyful with every additional day of life he's had.

I wonder, because Vice President Cheney has had a cold, if he's strained muscles in his chest--or even popped some rib cartilage--from coughing.

From what I've read and heard it sounds like an abundance of caution is being employed, (rightfully so) and initial tests are not showing cardiac related problems. Might be viral-related which isn't anything to sneeze at (pardon the pun) in 60+ year olds with cardiac histories. Keeping fingers crossed

Sometimes a cold is just a cold. But he is the VPOTUS, and his doctors are extracautious. If this was really serious, he'd have been taken to the hospital by ambulance, or if this was critical, by helicopter.

Given the other thread, perhaps he suffered from acute lowered blood pressure.
