What is intererest about Robert Byrd is that he recently was the line of succession when Jeffords jumped. We then took it back in the midterm election. U. of Virginia professor Julian Bond made a fool of himself on TV. He was screaming about a racist in the line of succession, believing he was referring to Trent Lott. He was right about one thing --- a racist, Byrd, was at that time in the line of succession.

To prevent that, some of Cheney's electors might decide to vote for a different candidate, which throws everything into chaos.
Maybe they can vote for Ralph Nader's VP. :) Thanks for clearing this up. It was the pre-swearing vacancy in deadline that I was concerned about. The post-swearing in vacancy proceedure is pretty settled.

Sometimes a cold is just a cold. But he is the VPOTUS, and his doctors are extracautious. If this was really serious, he'd have been taken to the hospital by ambulance, or if this was critical, by helicopter.

The reason they are so careful is because he had four previous heart attacks.

As someone who had seven heart attacks and a heart transplant, let me say this is just precaution. He should ok.

"I've had shortness of breath any number of times and they had nothing to do with heart trouble."
Vice President Cheney has experience with shortness of breath also as have I. Shortness of breath that is cardiac related is readily identified by one that has previously experienced it. The fact that he contacted his cardiologist would indicate that he was concerned about his heart.

Yes. I don't think I copied the whole link. Going to try it again.

We're just reviewing those possibilities. What you wrote was not what he said or what the truth likely is. Congestive Heart Failure is just one of many things that could be causing the shortness of breath. And if Cheney wasnt Vice President of the United States and didnt have a heart history, he probably wouldnt even have contacted a doctor until Monday much less have gone to the hospital. If he were to have CHF he would likely not be able to walk to the mailbox. He certainly wouldnt be out pheasant hunting. Get a grip on yourself. You sound like you hope its serious so you will have something to gab about.

If Cheney were to die before January 20, the balance of his current term would be filled by an appointee of President Bush upon confirmation by both houses of Congress.
If the death occurred before the meeting of the Electors (in early December) than the Electors would be free to vote for whomever they want for Vice President for the next term. One would presume that the Bush-Cheney pledged electors would honor Pres. Bush's choice, but they wouldn't necessarily have to do so.
If 17 or more Bush electors were to vote for someone other than Bush's choice, or no one at all, than the choice of Vice President would be put before the new U.S. Senate in January, between Edwards and whoever Bush chose (assuming that Bush's choice got the plurality of Bush-Cheney electors). Presumably the 55 Republican Senators would back the Bush choice above Edwards.
If Cheney were to die after the Electors met and elected him, the office of Vice President would be filled immediately by the President and Congress, and then become vacant again at noon on January 20, and would be subject to being filled by the President subject to confirmation by both houses of Congress. So, interestingly, we could have one man who serves two separate stints as Vice President, separated by a few hours. (Bush gets sworn in for a second term, the Congressmen and Senators go back to their chambers to confirm the VP again for the second term, and then the new VP gets sworn in for a second time).

Cowards and hypocrytes!
Some of the most deranged and depraved our society has to offer.

Yes, his medical history plays a big role (and as a relative of a heart transplant patient, I know how cautious the docs are)--but he's also the VPOTUS, a man revered by so many (DU excluded), so his docs are going to be extracautious. And, according to Fox, the tests he needs can only be done at the hospital.
I swear those Fox News Alerts make people panic.
