Winning in Fallujah Is Just the Beginning

Americans scouring news reports of the U.S.-led assault on the Iraqi city of Fallujah can be forgiven if they are experiencing a degree of confusion and uncertainty.

Air Force Gen. Richard B. Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, assures us that U.S. and Iraqi government forces are advancing steadily through the insurgent stronghold and that the assault has been "very, very successful." Yet even as troops move street by street through the Sunni city, the measure of their success is elusive. There's no uniformed enemy force, no headquarters, no central command complex for U.S. troops to occupy and win. At the end, there will be no surrender.

Instead, the outcome of the battle must be judged by a less clear-cut standard: not by the seizure and occupation of ground, but by the impact it has on the political and diplomatic process in Iraq. Its chances for success in that area are highly uncertain. Will Fallujah, like the famous Vietnam village, be the place we destroyed in order to save it? Will the bulk of the insurgents simply scatter to other Iraqi cities? Will we win a tactical victory only to fail in our strategic goal of convincing Iraqis that we are making their country safe for democracy -- and specifically for elections at the end of January?

The transportation network in Iraq is amazing when the guerillas can leave Fallujah and take Mosul while the troops are attacking Fallujah. The warning given three weeks early alerted them to leave. Two air force men, Rumsfeld and Myers, heading up a ground campaign is ridiculous. Now there is talk of Condaleeza replacing Rumsfeld as sec of defense. Why is Bush so determined to lose this war?

Newsweek reports that Gen. Shelton was in fact pretty open and frank in his criticisms of Wesley Clark: To say Clark was unpopular among his fellow officers in the military is an understatement. As he rapidly rose through the ranks, he was widely regarded as a champion brown-noser and know-it-all, a sort of Eddie Haskell in Army green. In conversation with friends, Colin Powell would privately put down General Clark as "Lieutenant Colonel Clark" i.e., a perpetual eager-beaver wanna-be. Some officers questioned his judgment. Talking to a high-ranking Clinton administration official, Gen. Hugh Shelton, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff who engineered Clark's firing, bluntly referred to Clark as a "nut."

He's a guy who spent a lifetime in service to his country. You may disagree with the political stance that he's adopted, but I'm not prepared to denigrate a man who has spent his life defending the right of free speech, just because he exercises that same right...no matter how much I disagree with him.

I saw that video too, the Brooklyn Connection one. Where the smarmy murdering terrorist is all buddy buddy shaking hands and catching up with his buddy Wes Clark. And then he's talking about going to war with UN forces. Some of which are Americans. He says this spring or next. I bet ol Wes is going to wish that video was never made if even one of OUR soldiers are killed by KLA. Wes Clark should be tried for treason and sent to leavenworth. I did listen to Clark at West Point, and I know he is no bozo. Some of the things he taught me there help prevent WWIII. Clark may have a bad rep here at FR, but he is far better then what most of the flamers here say.

I would like to know why Genrl Wesly Clark released Army Tanks to be used at WACO against the Branch Dividians. I believe he was the Base Commander at that time?

I think it was Clark that wanted to bomb the Russians in Kosovo because they took over the airport before the us forces could get there. I think is was a British general that told him he wasn't about to start world war III because of him (Clark). That is distinguished?
