Texas would get its own seat on the House panel that hands out chairmanships and committee assignments under a proposal Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., outlined in a letter to his Republican colleagues yesterday.
Last week, Texas elected 21 Republicans to the House, the most of any state. That included five new GOP seats won as a result of Majority Leader Tom DeLay's successful effort to redraw his home state's congressional districts.
Under the proposed changes, Texas would join the 20-member California delegation and the 18-member Florida delegation as the only states with a guaranteed representative on the 28-member Republican Steering Committee, the leadership-dominated panel that decides committee assignments.
To assure Texas a seat, Hastert's plan would reduce from 10 to 9 the number of regional representatives. Besides regional members, the Steering Committee includes party leaders, selected committee chairmen and representatives of the freshman and sophomore classes and of small states.
DeLay's redistricting is the gift that keeps on giving.
oh well
"Why is that system so complicated?"
Because, it's the gubmint.
GO TEXAS!!!
I haven't been retired long enough from operating a ship to stop cringing every time I hear or read that term.
Just the thought of a committee at the helm trying to decide which way to steer is nightmare material. Come to think about it, from what I've seen, the committee approach is equally useless in most other applications as well.
