Gonzales Wrong for Attorney General; Why Won't Bush pick a Pro-Life Nominee? American Life League.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 11 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Judie Brown, president of American Life League, issued the following statement in response to news that White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales is being considered as the replacement for U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft:

"President Bush appears to be doing all that he can to downright ignore pro-life principles. There can be no other explanation for his recommendation of Alberto Gonzales as attorney general. Gonzales has a record, and that record is crystal clear.

"As a Texas Supreme Court justice, Gonzales' rulings implied he does not view abortion as a heinous crime. Choosing not to rule against abortion, in any situation, is the epitome of denying justice for an entire segment of the American population -- preborn babies in the womb.

"When asked if his own personal feelings about abortion would play a role in his decisions, Gonzales told the Los Angeles Times in 2001 that his 'own personal feelings about abortion don't matter... The question is, what is the law, what is the precedent, what is binding in rendering your decision. Sometimes, interpreting a statute, you may have to uphold a statute that you may find personally offensive. But as a judge, that's your job.' Gonzales' position is clear: the personhood of the preborn human being is secondary to technical points of law, and that is a deadly perspective for anyone to take.

"President Bush claims he wants to assist in bringing about a culture of life. Such a culture begins with total protection for every innocent human being from the moment that person's life begins. Within the short period of one week, the president has been silent on pro-abortion Sen. Arlen Specter's desire to chair the senate judiciary committee, and has spoken out in favor of a judge with a pro-abortion track record to lead the Justice Department.

"Why is President Bush betraying the babies? Justice begins with protecting the most vulnerable in our midst. Please, Mr. President -- just say no to the unjust views of Alberto Gonzales."

Where will that leave our Black Ops boys and the squads the Executive Branch is now empowered to assign for assassination duty?

If they're caught, they're hosed. That's the way it's always been. And wearing the uniform hasn't done a f***ing thing to protect our soldiers and Marines over the years.

Are the alumnae of Iran-Contra, for example, or the assassins now a part of our arsenal for the War on Terror somehow barred from any of the basic protections against torture, humiliation or imprisonment without just cause?

If they're caught, they're hosed. That's the way it's always been. And wearing the uniform hasn't done a f***ing thing to protect our soldiers and Marines over the years.

But don't recasting the basic human rights on which Geneva is based as conditional at best.

I'm sorry. Terrorists are not "human" in that sense. They've made it abundantly clear that they disdain the very notion of "human rights." I merely propose paying them in their preferred coin.

Those who demand that we punctilliously observe every jot and tittle--including the imaginary ones--of the Geneva Convention, while excusing the enemy's grossest violations thereof, are giving aid and comfort to the enemies of the United States.

They need to either shut up, or they may discover that those of us who are intent on winning this war may start noticing them, and that we might start reading Article III, Section 3 of the US Constitution.

I'm just sick of seeing otherwise good people demonized by the right and the left over this issue, especially one like Gonzalez who shows no evidence of being pro-abortion simply because HE INTERPRETED LAW THAT HE WAS NOT ELECTED TO CHANGE OR LEGISLATE FROM THE BENCH. The man interpreted laws related to parental consent. He did not make some ruling to uphold abortion laws. So I say to you what I say to liberals. THINK, don't FEEL. When you do that, you will see this is nothing to get all riled about. And what's more, it's nothing to oppose an otherwise qualified man over. And even less, it's nothing to base some rash assumption on that Bush is abandoning his pro-life positions. Sheesh, it's hard sharing an ideology with some of you people.

Well said.

Alberto Gonzales has eschewed legislating, leaving that to legislators. This is commendable.

He has drawn the concentrated fire of leftist anacephalics in the last 48 hours for "creating the climate which allowed the torture at the infamous Abu Ghraib prison."

The leftist propaganda industry finds no fault either with abortion or the 300,000 victims in Hussein's mass graves, but demands Gonazales' ouster for panties on prisoners' heads.

Arguments to facts not in evidence are not probative of Gonzales' abortion opinions.

His selection to continue the outstanding service of John Ashcroft in preventing domestic terrorism indicates the highest confidence of the man we re-elected.

When he is seated it will be because he has satisfied the Senate.

Sorry, but if the Senate is "satisfied" at any point regarding Specter's loyalty, they are a bunch of damn fools.

Past a certain point, I don't care. If someone is bound and determined to be a fool, there is nothing that I can do to change their mind.

If they seat Specter without some provision for giving him the hook in a rapid and expeditious manner, they are taking the long end of a very short bet.

I totally support this nomination. President Bush has know him for many years, and is obviously trusting of his ability to do the job of AG.

Without first hand knowledge I have to trust the President's personal knowledge and conviction over the hysterics from either side.

Your post 27 is not convincing.

At least, that seems to be the consensus of Free Republic.

Yes, I know the feeling. I've been trying to talk sense into the head bangers for a week now.

texasflower, you crack me up.

You tell me in 358: "You are hysterical right now. Calm down..."

Then in 359 say "Good point. I lost my head for a minute!"

I think you might be projecting.

Look at 325, 350, and 184 then get back to me.

Good day Luis. My youngest son showed me how he had looped the Castro fall into a forward/reverse dance that he put to music. When he showed it to me I thought of you.

Here is to hope that Castro soon joins Arafat in Hell and the people of Cuba have a future again.

"When Gonzales was a member of the Texas Supreme Court, he voted to allow a teenager to get an abortion without notifying her parents, circumventing the notification law in that state."

That's an outright lie.

I have a problem with people who lie.

In actuality, Alberto Gonzales based his decision on the letter of the Texas law.

What you posted about Alberto Gonzales is no better than what Michael Moore writes about President Bush, and makes you and the people who authored the lie the moral equals to Moore.

I think it's possible to argue in a sane and rational way for Specter to not be granted the chairmanship, or to ensure that there is a substantial guarantee of his good behavior (perhaps something in the resolution seating him that he remains in the seat "at the pleasure of the Majority Leader," granting Frist sole discretion to throw him out).

None of us knows for sure if this will hurt the side of life. I prefer to go on a more cautious side to prevent unintended consequences, for example Gonzales going from AG to SCOTUS in a few years and being another Kennedy or Souter. I'm not prepared to accept that unnecessary risk.

Time will tell.

"I think it's possible to argue in a sane and rational way for Specter to not be granted the chairmanship."

It is totally possible, however, look at many of these threads and the language being transmitted to Senators and the White House. It quickly went beyond sane and rationale to shrill, insulting and demanding.

Post 27 is an outright lie.

I know. And anybody who's read Free Republic for the last 24 hours know that downtown Judie Brown and her unappeaseable cohorts are spreading falsehoods.

But, it's OK with them if a judge turns activist on the conservative side, as long as he doesn't do it on the liberal side.
