While Yasser Arafat is being remembered by many as the father of modern terrorism, the United Nations headquarters in New York City is honoring the Palestinian leader by lowering its flag to half-mast.
Yasser Arafat and Kofi Annan |
"Deeply moved" by news of his death, U.N. General Secretary Kofi Annan gave Arafat a "special tribute" before the General Assembly this afternoon after conveying condolences to his wife and daughter.
"By signing the Oslo accords in 1993 he took a giant step towards the realization of this vision," Annan said in a statement delivered by a spokesman.
"It is tragic that he did not live to see it fulfilled."
In a briefing in New York, spokesman Fred Eckhard said the secretary-general has asked Terje Roed-Larsen, the U.N. special coordinator for the Middle East peace process and personal representative to the Palestinian Authority, to represent him at President Arafat's funeral in Cairo.
Eckhard said Annan was not going to the funeral because it was impossible for him to make the travel arrangements on such short notice.
The U.N. chief, he noted, travels commercially and to get to Cairo by tomorrow probably would have required a private plane.
Annan was not sending any kind of message by not attending, Eckhard asserted.
He noted that the General Assembly, in a series of rulings over the years, had accorded Arafat a status equivalent to a head of state.
Annan decided Arafat should be accorded the same status in death as he obtained during his life, and the General Assembly president agreed, the spokesman said.
OMG no they didn't!
It is definitely time to kick these walking rectums off our soil.
To Kofi Annan with love,Bart
BURN BABY BURN!!!
DITTO
I've already barfed twice today for real... so I think I might be safe...... **urp**
Well, you know that Bush ordered Powell not to have anything to do with Arafat.
Thank God for President Bush.
Chrissy Mathews
LOL!
Disgusting
But you continue to naiviely assume that Arafat's cause was Palestinian statehood (which is indeed a just cause), not the destruction of Israel and a perpetual state of war
___How can I say it differently? Arafat was corrupt but the cause that he was associated with had merit...if the association was
fake, maybe so, but he was still
associated with it---and by itself
it is a cause which has merit...so says President Bush and me, Bushbacker..so the UN can honor that cause without honoring Arafat
"I will be emailing Fox News and complaining about this. I am really disgusted by this. I could care less about Arafat.
===
Well let's hope others follow suit. You are not the first.
That's putting it mildly. He was a terrorist. ....no less of one than Hussein and bin Laden, in fact.
"it is a cause which has merit...so says President Bush and me, Bushbacker"
lol....yeah, I get it that you support the Prez. You've told me three times now, and your username kinda gives it away. I support him too.
".....so the UN can honor that cause without honoring Arafat"
Lowering the UN flag to half-staff on the day of Arafat's death honors the man himself, and that man was a terrorist hellbent on the destruction of Israel (and a man who has ordered the death of many American citizens). If the UN wants to honor the Palestinian cause there are plenty of better ways of doing it than honoring a man who cared not one whit for peace.
"Arafat was corrupt...."

___False...they were associated with evil causes, and Arafat (even
if he had ulterior motives) was associated with a meritorious cause.

____And he supports a Palestinian
state, at peace with Israel...I jjust keep mentioning his because I don't think people on this group
want such a state and there is a lot of Arab-hating and Islam-bashing here...so it's always necessary to point that Bush's views are contrary to that.

___Well, I think the flag can also be construed as acknowledging the cause...but why all this focus on Arafat and a UN flag...what does this have to do with American conservatism???
AArafat's dead...now there's a chance for peace, which--if it happens---will relieve the US of
constantly getting dragged into a conflict which is truly separate from our war against global terror.
The thing I find disgusting, is that a Union Hall for Grips, IASTE, in our community refused to hang their flag at half staff when Reagan died.
The US flag in front of my dorm at the University of Michigan was at half-mast today. Knowing how liberal U of M is the flag was at half-mast for Arafat, which is absolutely disgusting.
Thanks for the ping!
Good picture. I hope the guy's shoes weren't soiled by the rag on the ground.
BTTT!!!!!!
Well put -- in a nutshell.
The charlatan Arafat betrayed his own people and took them and the UN to the cleaners (and the UN and France are NOT about to admit they were flim-flammed by Arafat for 30 years, are they?)
