Firefighters: Van Explodes While Woman Sniffs Propane
NewsNet5 ^ | November 11, 2004 | Associated Press

CANTON, Ohio -- A woman was sniffing propane in the back of a van when her husband entered the van with a lighted cigarette, causing an explosion that ripped the roof off the vehicle.

Donald Rohrig was taken to Akron Children's Hospital and was listed in good condition. His wife, Tammy Rohrig, was taken to Aultman Hospital and was listed in satisfactory condition.

Firefighters said Tammy Rohrig had been sniffing propane in a van Tuesday evening when Donald Rohrig went out to look for her. Gordon Black of the Fire Prevention Bureau said Donald Rohrig went into the van with a lighted cigarette, causing it to explode.

The explosion caused a flash fire, which was contained to the van, according to the Fire Department.

Harry Cavitt, a retired firefighter who lives a half-mile away, said he had never seen anything like this before.

"It's just scary thinking about it," said neighbor Lillie Johnson, Cavitt's mother.

Firefighters were called out to the house in October for another propane-related situation. Officials said the house was full of a propane smell and had to be ventilated by the Fire Department.

My only problem with this guy's site is that he makes "red" states blue. Geez, you'd think he'd get with the program.

I know that. I meant after he entered the van it ignited. Poor attempt at humor on my part I guess.

>>Okay, why was the husband taken to a CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL???>>

Maybe that state is like Sout Carolina, where you can marry a 13-year old with the parents' permission...

From the online AskOxford.com:
• verb (past lit; past part. lit or lighted) 1 provide with light. 2 ignite or be ignited.

From the online "Common Errors in English":
"Lighted/Lit: Don’t fret over the difference between these two words; they’re interchangeable."

There are other sources I've found that also give the two forms as interchangeable, but this should suffice for now.

I've never heard of this either. Why would anyone want to sniff propane? It has a nasty odor, like rotten eggs.

Ugh!!! You actually nailed my least favorit 'pressism'.

For the longest time they used to say "the suspect plead guilty"...and all of a sudden, every tv or radio station started using "pleaded"...

It's the groupthink mentality at work...Just like if one reporter starts pronouncing a place in the middle east one way, everyone else will stop using the original pronounciation and use the 'new and improved' version.

Bah!!! I'm turning into a grumpy old man, and it's all the media's fault!!!!

Propane, like natural gas, has a touch of methane or some other smelly gas added to it so you can detect leaks. Otherwise you would never smell a leak.

I play with propane quite a lot. I'm in to pulsejet engine building (see www.pulse-jets.com). The hobbyists use it in their test engines because it is (relatively) benign. The gas and flame rises away from you, and since it is a gas it doesn't cover you in flamable liquid during a flashback.

Propane has a wide range of mixtures where it will burn. If you have a lean mixture, what you will get is a "boom" rather than a flame. I suspect our Darwin candidates were just barely lucky.

What does natural gas smell like?

Rotten eggs: a bad smell for a good reason
Natural gas and piped propane smell like rotten eggs or sulphur. Because natural gas is odourless, we add trace amounts of a chemical called mercaptan, which has a distinctive rotten egg or sulphur-like odour. It smells bad for a good reason! In case of a leak, we want you to be able to detect and identify it. We never charge to investigate gas odour calls.
