Clemens wins record 7th Cy Young Award 11/9/2004 8:36 PM By: Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Houston Astros great, and former Texas Longhorn, Roger Clemens easily won his record seventh Cy Young Award on Tuesday

The pitcher dubbed the "Rocket" received 23 of 32 first-place votes and 140 points in balloting released by the Baseball Writers Association of America.

Clemens won the National League Cy Young for the first time -- after capturing six Cy Youngs in the American League.

Arizona's Randy Johnson finished second. Houston's Roy Oswalt was third.

Clemens, 42, is the oldest Cy Young winner. Gaylord Perry was 40 when he won the NL honor in 1978.

He deserves it. He took the Astros to the NL championship. Good for him.

Has the AL winner been announced yet? I have my fingers crossed for Johan Santana.

Tip of the hat to a great picher and a state that produces pitchers with bionic arms.

Gaylord Perry was 40 when he won the NL honor in 1978.

Perry looked like he was pushing sixty.

Neikro should have won it that year, but he had the misfortune of playing in the "Launching Pad" with a crappy team behind him.

Clemens was a jerk when I coached Little League.

He was a jerk in junior-high school.

He was a jerk in high school.

He was a jerk in college.

He was a jerk when with the Boston Red Sox.

He was a jerk when with the Expos.

He was a jerk when with the Yankees.

He was a jerk when with the Astros.

He is still, to this day, a jerk.

Some things never change.

He really is an ageless wonder and a freak of nature.

Even though he turned his back on the Yankees to pitch for Houston, he deserves it. Kudos Roger. May you continue to do the thing you love -- pitch -- long into the future.

I respectfully disagree.

Randy Johnson put up better numbers, in every category except wins, and that was because of how pathetic the rest of the D-backs were.

Re Clemens:
He won his first nine decisions and finished 18-4 with a 2.98 ERA and 218 strikeouts.

And re Johnson:
The Big Unit went 16-14 with a 2.60 ERA and a major league-leading 290 strikeouts - Arizona scored two runs or fewer in 17 of his 35 starts.

To be honest, Johnson was a better pitcher.

Yes, it's too bad Johnson was playing for a minor league team this year. Otherwise, he would have won the award easily.

Steve Carlton won 27 games in a year when his team won only 59.

Randy Johnson's 16-14 is impressive on a team that barely topped 50 wins, but Clemens won a lot of close games and fully deserves the award. Wins are what ultimately counts, and Clemens always seemed to have just enough to win.

Clemens's career record is now 328-164, exactly twice as many wins as losses. When a whole team goes 108-54, it is regarded as a great, great team. For an individual pitcher to do for his entire career is almost unparalleled -- I think Clemens has the top career winning percentage of any righthander with 200 wins.

OK, if you want to go back to the 19th century, then Caruthers did even better with his 218-99 percentage. So Clemens has the top career winning percentage of any righthander with more than 218 wins, still extremely impressive....

Some would say that records from before 1900 shouldn't count because the game was so different; for some records that is true, but won-lost percentage is insensitive to any changes in the game because they affect both teams equally, so I don't have a problem counting Caruthers.

I thoroughly dislike Clemens.

However, I can't deny that he is talented and he deserves it.
