Steve Carlton won 27 games in a year when his team won only 59.

Randy Johnson's 16-14 is impressive on a team that barely topped 50 wins, but Clemens won a lot of close games and fully deserves the award. Wins are what ultimately counts, and Clemens always seemed to have just enough to win.

Clemens's career record is now 328-164, exactly twice as many wins as losses. When a whole team goes 108-54, it is regarded as a great, great team. For an individual pitcher to do for his entire career is almost unparalleled -- I think Clemens has the top career winning percentage of any righthander with 200 wins.
