It's about 8:42 in the morning, and you have just sat down at your desk with a cup of hot coffee. As the sheriff of this small rural community, you are reviewing the overnight reports from your graveyard shift deputies. It was, as usual, a relatively uneventful night.
Unbeknownst to you as you read your reports, only about five minutes before, a nondescript car with tinted windows along with two minivans just rolled into the parking lot of your local county elementary school. They stop near the school's main office, parking along the curb.....

Doesn't matter where those ragheads try their monkey business. Armed Americans will reduce them to unrecognizable grease spots on the road if so much as one hair on a child's head is harmed. And I'll personally see to it that those mongrels are buried in pig fat.

No, of course we are not prepared and anyone who says we are is confused and only lying to themselves. Most everyone wants to believe that it won't happen here, but they are living a fantasy...since we don't close our borders, secure the airlines, etc., will pay for it later.
Considering that the residents along that windey road are very likely to be heavily armed, while the law abiding residents of New York and Chicago are effectively disarmed, I'd saw the Jihadies would go for the NY and Chicago. The only countervaling factors would be that their Guru, bin Laden has said that the "Blue" areas would not be attacked, and that the Jihadies that actually do the deed won't care much about their own chances for survival.
My bet would be a "red state" city. Omaha, Kansas City, Oklahoma City, Dallas, Houston, etc, etc. That's if they try to pull it off, and on balence I don't think they will.
This is exactly what the terrorists want. An undisciplined mob will end up shooting themselves before hitting a terrorist. I won't even dream of the cause and effect of such a scenario.
A small town faced with this problem would not have an undisciplined mob of armed citizens. It would have a lot of capable, determined, armed, competent, able and willing people.
Or, are you one of those who think the residents of small towns are toothless, uncultured, inbred, hillbilly cretins?
The spirit of the Columbine School of Valor is alive and well, I'd wager.
However, if John Q. Citizen were to try to intervene with a 9 mm pistol or a shotgun, he'd be shot down like a dog by the "well-disciplined" SWAT teams........
If rural communities want to organize and duly deputize their citizenry (and spend the money to adequately train and equip them) I see no problem with that, but I kind of doubt that any rural locality has that kind of funding.
We know every car that doesn't belong on our long, windy country road...
According to "Law and Order, the city kids take guns to school with them routinely...

Rural localities (mine, for instance) do just that sort of organizing with little or no funding.
Additionally, most in the rural communities are ex-service members. I don't know where you get the "mob" idea...reading fiction, maybe.
There most certainly is a network in each area of my extremely rural county, there is an excellent communication infrastructure, and our sheriff, a seasoned adult -- not to mention Republican -- is no idiot in spite of urban preconceptions.
I know of very few families that don't have night vision goggles, and none who are unarmed. Most are excellent shots, including the women and girls.
I can see a mob in a city, maybe, but not here in my county, or any of the surrounding counties for that matter.
I'm guessing you live in an urban or suburban area.
Haven't you been watching "Law and Order"?
The KIDS in the cities are armed. It's gang survival, there.
