ATLANTA, Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Honda today announced plans to build a $100 million plant in the city of Tallapoosa, Ga., 40 miles west of Atlanta, to produce automatic transmissions as part of a broader North American Powertrain Strategy. The plan also includes significant investments to add production of high precision gears at a Honda transmission plant in Ohio, and key engine components at a Honda engine facility in Alabama. In all, Honda will invest $270 million and create 600 jobs across three states.

I was a "kid" in the 60s and 70s, when I got my "feel" for cars, and I would never, never, never buy a GM. That's unfortunate. My DeVille is suhweet! My wife loves her Suburban. I did look at an Infiniti, though.
What the hey? If you like it, buy it. Simple enough for me.

That's right.
Honda's corporate philosophy dictates that the company -- whenever it is feasible to do so -- should assemble vehicles in the country in which they are sold.

the auto industry is protected in the US - import quotas and light truck tariffs. it works. the Japanese are smart, they know they could build all their cars for the US market in Thailand et al for far lower costs, and decimate the US auto industry. But they don't want to spark a trade war and sanctions, so they play "nice" and we all get along.
To: Alberta's Child
because they know what the alternative would be, in the US market anyway, to bringing them all in from Thailand.

Something to remember here is that cars are not like most manufactured products. You can load a bunch of Nike sneakers, Levi's jeans, Sony televisions, etc. in standard containers and ship them here from anywhere in the world at a relatively low cost.
Motor vehicles, on the other hand, are a different story. They have to be shipped in oceangoing vessels that are specially made for vehicles, and they can't simply be stacked on a pier the way containers are piled up. As a result, the cost of shipping autos is much higher than the cost of shipping containerized freight -- which makes a U.S. auto plant much more attractive for a foreign manufacturer who is looking to sell cars here in the U.S.

Imagine Honda creating 600 new American jobs. Are they all in the red states?Amid all of the whining about outsourcing, Honda is insourcing in Ohio too. There, they are making 50,000 engines for GM to put in Saturn SUVs.

Dell Plans North Carolina Plant, to Hire 1,500That's because N.C. is giving Dell $200 million in tax breaks. Just down the road, sits IBM -- which got NOTHING. If I were IBM, I'd be pee-oed.

Most types of freight are shipped on specialised ships of one sort or another, and, sea transport, of any sort, is comparatively cheap.
There are quite a few U.S. ports that are perfectly capable of handling car carriers.

Dell was still gonna build another plant somewhere in the U.S.A.

My wife loves her Honda Element. I think it's ugly. She thinks its cute and funky. I must admit, though, one can pack a lot of gear in it.

Especially when the ship sinks, like the Tricolor did with 3000 BMW's on board early last year.

Part of our decline to a 3rd world economy. Can you imagine this occurring during our parent's time. One the bright side, buy good Japanese companies. Its a good hedge against the impending dollar collapse.
