No. He wants to be loved by the New York Times and is teddy Kennedy's "best friend".

I don't want to see Ashcroft replaced at all.

The rumor is, Ashcroft has had enough and wants to step down. I can understand that. He's been brutalized by the left.

Hatch is a flake.

Probably more truth to that than you know -- it's almost like an inside-Mormon-joke. Both Hatch and Flake are old-line Mormon names; and many of them are blood kin.

The thing I've noticed about Mormon politicos is that, as they get older, they tend to get more dovish, less punitive. But that may be an overgeneralization.

"Would you rather have him in a position to make new law of his own desire, or to enforce law of someone else's desire? He is the prime driving force behind the intellectual property rights initiatives that trouble you. Wouldn't you rather have him gone before he accomplishes his goals in this respect?"

You make a good point, that he would be out of the senate before he mangaes to get his legislation passed. But I am also worried about how he would enforce current laws as attorney general. I think the situation we have currently with the movie/music industry suing teenagers, is pretty unacceptable.

The point of this thread isn't whether we like or dislike Hatch, but whether conservatism overall would be better served if he leaves the Senate (and Senate Judiciary Committee) immediately.

No. Hatch is spineless and is influenced by questionable friends (Teddy Kennedy).

You would rather that Hatch remain in the Senate, authoring legislation with Ted Kennedy and compromising with liberals on the choice of SCOTUS justices for two to eight more years?

Wasn't it Orrin Hatch that reported the U.S. had compromised Osama Bin Laden's satellite phone and were listening to his conversations.(Just before the war in Afghanistan) This was just after a high level security briefing, and was a MAJOR intelligence gaff.

Good question. I don't remember which senator it was. Are you sure it wasn't "Leaky" Leahy?

"The clearest suggestion of successful US monitoring of Al Qaeda communications?and the closest to the September 11 attacks?was the statement by Utah Senator Orrin Hatch, a conservative Republican with wide contacts in the national security establishment. He told the Associated Press on September 11 that the US government was monitoring bin Laden?s communications electronically and had overheard two bin Laden aides celebrating the successful terrorist attack. "They have an intercept of some information that included people associated with bin Laden who acknowledged a couple of targets were hit," he told AP. (Source: Associated Press, September 11, 2001, "World Trade Center collapses in terrorist attack," by David Crary and Jerry Schwartz)"

I'd like to see Hatch retire. Joining him would be John McCain and a number of others if I had my way.

Okay, you're looking only the second part of the issue. You need to consider the entire issue.

If Hatch takes over the AG slot, it will be for four years and he will retire from public service at the end of it.

If he doesn't take over the AG slot, then he remains in the Senate (and on the Judiciary Committee) for two and very possibly eight more years, authoring legislation with Ted Kennedy and compromising with liberals to put justices on the SCOTUS in the mold of Ruth Bader-Ginsberg (which appointment Hatch boasted of in his biography).

Which scenario do you prefer?

I'd like to see Hatch retire.

This would have the effect of retiring him from the Senate immediately and from public service altogether in four years.

I don't want to see Hatch in any appointed position that requires verve and nerve.....no where, no how.

I hope the President doesn't start re-treading worn-out old wussies who are nothing more than walking mouths.

We need some dynamic new-blood type who won't fold like a deck of cards when the liberals start attack and smear pressures. Hatch should be appointed music professor at Brigham Young University.

No.

Hatch pushed for a similar patriot act bill when Klinton was in office. Too statist.
