Hold your friends close.
Hold your enemies closer.

"I don't understand why the President backed Specter in his campaign over the more conservative Republican."

Politics is often a game of expediency and compromise. I doubt Bush wanted Specter to remain in office. However, in PA the conservative running in the primary would probably not be able to win a general election. Specter only won in PA because he is a RINO. Remember, Bush did not win that state.

The president and his advisors probably thought, "better a RINO in the senate than a Democrat." I don't like it myself, but that is pragmatism at work.

In case you hadn't heard, word is that Specter has dodged the bullet and will be approved.

That is far from decided. It will be up to the Committee Members and then up to the entire GOP caucus. Any 'word' is purely speculation at this point.

It is. Rove's imprimatur yesterday was the death knell:

Rove statement was very neutral. He just said if Specter is Chairmen Bush trust him to keep his word. Rove repeated 'if' twice indicating it is far from over.

Not according to FOXNEWS. And it is unheard of to deny a chairmanship.

Kinda like when he backed up RINO Arnold for Governor here in CA (McClintock was the more conservative candidate, but was unlikely to win). Politics stinks sometimes....

The senority rules are fairly new and they have been challenged in the past. Senator Lugar in fact challenged Senator Helms for chairman for the Foreign Relations committee. That failed, but it has been done.

Not according to FOXNEWS.

Most people including Fox's Shepard Smith report that Specter is still not out of the water yet.

" It's over."

Yes, it is. I don't like Specter one bit, but if you have your ear to the ground, you can hear it. He's in. We can only hope he's defanged.

A defanged Specter would be the best possible outcome. His seal of approval gives cover to the other wafflemeisters.

Today on Hannity I heard Robert Bork say that Specter voted to put the US Military under the jurisdiction of the international court.

Get that guy off the committee! What more do we need?
FAX the White House at 202-456-2461.

Not gonna try and stop him. The President wanted him re-elected and that's good enough for me.

Stop the bloodletting!

First of all...we need a conservative who has been a GOVENOR or Mayor of a large city, not a SENATOR to run for the presidency. Period.

We need someone with experience running an administration and making decisions that directly impact lives...not someone used to walking the senate hallways, making speeches from the floor that are never challanged directly and especially not someone who appears soft and non-leaderlike.

Frist? Oh please.

Ya might as well run elmer fudd up against her heinous.

Frisk isn't going to run for president. That takes backbone and a lot of work.

Rove's imprimatur yesterday was the death knell: "We take Senator Specter at his word."

This has to be the fastest kiss-off of a voting bloc in world history. Not one week since the election and Rove pretty much says "Thank you very much now go home" to the country's pro-life movement.

I refuse to believe that Rove is speaking for President Bush.

Rove and Bush have been friends for 25 years. Rove speaks for Bush. Count on it.

I don't think it's over. From what I understand the thousands of calls are still going on, and the members are discussing behind closed doors...just not saying much in public.

You can call them until your the telephone receiver will become attached to your ear. They won't change. They're not facing re-election for at least another 2 years. Specter has made a deal with them, and that's that.

That's not to say callers haven't made a difference. The fact that Specter provoked such an angry reaction can be held over him to keep him in line. And it will give the leadership cover if they find the need to remove him later.
