The New York Times' Maureen Dowd, who in her first postelection column last week accused President Bush of "dividing the country along fault lines of fear, intolerance, ignorance and religious rule," apparently thinks she went too easy on the Republican. In fact, it is no exaggeration to say that her second postelection column, published yesterday, bordered on the hysterical.
"Just how much did Karl Rove hate not being one of the cool guys in high school in the '60s? Enough to hatch schemes to marshal the forces of darkness to take over the country?" Miss Dowd asked.
"Oh, yeah," she answered.
The columnist added: "W.'s presidency rushes backward, stifling possibilities, stirring intolerance, confusing church with state, blowing off the world, replacing science with religion, and facts with faith. We're entering another dark age, more creationist than cutting edge, more premodern than postmodern. Instead of leading America to an exciting new reality, the Bushies cocoon in a scary, paranoid, regressive reality. Their new health care plan will probably be a return to leeches.
"America has always had strains of isolationism, nativism, chauvinism, puritanism and religious fanaticism. But most of our leaders, even our devout presidents, have tried to keep these impulses under control. Not this crew. They don't call to our better angels; they summon our nasty devils."
Miss Dowd repeated some of this yesterday on NBC's "Meet the Press." Her conservative colleague, William Safire, appeared on the program with her, and gently assured Miss Dowd that everything would be OK, and that someday the Democrats will return to power.

I saw Dowd this weekend on a post election show hosted by Chris Matthews. She was on a panel with Karen Tumulty, Evan Thomas and some lady from BBC whose name escapes me. Dowd was clearly out of her element. The other panelists were serious people, and were making serious points (although Tumulty's and Thomas's points were often wrong), but Dowd was simply a lightweight.
I'll take one of those to go with nothin' on it...
He didn't mean to divide the country that way.
It's just that the "skeerd, intolerant, ignorant atheists" wouldn't vote for him.
And MoDo's bile and bitterness will lead the way.
Please keep it up, MoDo. It's an incredibly enlightened outlook on life that is destined to bring great success to the Party you trust so much.
Maureen is well on her way to becoming a nasty cross between Mary McGrory and Helen Thomas.
Hatred will kill, someday MoDo will realize the law of unintended consequences.
The phrase "Mo, you ignorant slut!" comes to mind.
you're assuming it's a he.. and the perfect relaxation cocktail for her...Pablum..
Several years ago, Dowd wrote a column claiming (actually whining) that men don't like powerful women, sort of as an a excuse as to why she is fifty-something and still single. Seeing her on Meet the Press, I know why she is single. She is nasty, stoopid, bigotted, a whiner, unhappy, and, generally, an all around b*tch, not a very powerful woman at all. That part shows that she is also delusional. As pretty she is, she is very unattractive.
Bah-dum bum!
Yeah, you may be right.
But remember, it's not easy being MoDo. Just think of how difficult it must be to be correct...all the time. Gosh, what a burden!
Wonder why?
I caught part of her act on chris matthew's show yesterday morning. She looked and sounded extremely bitter.
She's never been the same since Michael Douglas decided to dump her for any other woman.
I think you're on to something there.
Obviously she was picked on as a child, and got no dates in high school.
We're all supposed to suffer because of it?
My personal theory is that life, for Democrats, is just an extension of high school.
Well, you know, you could be right.
Writing, as an extremist(as Sen. Specter would charaterize me)I was being generous.
hey dowd
its time to replace the batteries in your little toys
BIT*H your getting a little edgy there.
Limbaugh continued: "It's obvious Maureen Dowd hasn't gotten over her breakup with Michael Douglas who she thinks is a real American president but he didn't do anything but utter the words written for him by Aaron Sorkin and stand where someone director told him to stand and have his hair coifed by somebody who knew what to do, and then he blew it by running off with Catherine Zeta-Jones, leaving Maureen Dowd in the lurch. All she's got now is bourbon for mouthwash, and it's showing on her columns."
Poison continues to spew from her. It's rather funny.
