More on the protests to make sure he doesnt get the chair of the Senate Judiciary..
Thanks for the heads up! I'm there!
Up now...says his office lines are jammed
Specter's making "nice" with his newest public pronouncement. It will be a terrible error in judgment to mistake these pronouncements for honesty.
I'm a little disappointed in Santorum. He apparently is encouraging Specter to make these conciliatory statements. The skinny is that Santorum is worried about 2006 and will need Specter's support for re-election.
There are three possible reasons for this:
1. Santorum believes Specter won't get the chairmanship anyhow, and would like to secure his moderate base influence for re-election in 2006.
2. Santorum believes the lesser evil is Specter in the chairmanship if he can secure another term in 2006 and do some legislative damage. Frist will carry the water on this, anyhow.
3. Santorum's just another politician.
I'm hoping it's #1. I think it's #2. I doubt it's #3.
#1..
It's #1....Santorum is smart enough to know that Specter has cooked his own goose...hehe.
The lesson here is...don't (mess) with the President...
Hopefully..
Grassley is the key. He is on the committee and senior to Specter, but doesn't want to give up his Finance Committee chairmanship. He should give it up anyway, and take the Judiciary chair, for the good of the country. President Bush should personally ask him to do this.
Santorum has lost a huge amount of credibility in my book. to see him make all those impassioned, eloquent, brave arguments for life on the floor of the Senate, and then support a man like Specter, who has no respect for life whatsoever, was repulsive. His support for Specter in light of his most recent comments is just pathetic.
Very confusing, K-Lo is the one and only Kimberley Locke, there is another K-Lo?
So, if Grassley moves to chair Judiciary, who moves into the chair at Finance?
Another thought is that maybe the pubbies want it to be Spector who reads the political writing on the wall and decides to resign the Chairmanship, rather than push him out. They need to get Spector on the reservation and keep him there because they need his vote.
Your first paragraph is my fear. Check out Hugh Hewitt's thoughts as well, at www.hughhewitt.com.
My question would be: has a chairman ever been removed, as you suggest MacSpectre might be removed if he strayed? Mightn't the repercussions of such an "ideological purge" (as it would be reported) be pretty serious? I can hear the campaign remarks.
Dan
Forget about Grassley. Finance is going to be the glamour committee in this Senate. Grassley's name will be on the President's tax reform bill if it passes. He has done yeoman's work on Finance. We should not ask him to give it up. A good tax reform bill is just as important as confirming good judges!
Senate staffers have told Lopez, whose comments sometimes appear under "KJL," that the only way that Specter can be blocked is by forcing the Senate through messages (phone, fax, email, letters) to the Senate. It will take a firestorm of polite, but firm, input to the Senate.

Need pictures of Laura and K-Lo.
