Specter denies pro-choice litmus test
Washington Times ^ | 11/08/04 | Audrey Hudson

Posted on 11/08/2004 12:15:09 AM PST by kattracks

Sen. Arlen Specter, who set off a firestorm of controversy last week among conservatives who interpreted certain remarks as a warning to President Bush not to nominate pro-life judicial candidates, pledged yesterday to treat the president's choices fairly and quickly.
Mr. Specter, a Pennsylvania Republican next in line to lead the Senate Judiciary Committee, said his earlier remarks had been taken out of context and he would not attempt to impose a "litmus test."
Karl Rove, senior White House political adviser, said Mr. Bush has been assured that all court nominees will be treated fairly.

"Senator Specter is a man of his word, and we'll take him at his word if he becomes chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee," Mr. Rove told "Fox News Sunday."

"He told the president, 'I will make certain your nominees receive a hearing. I'll make certain they receive a vote, and the appellate nominees will be brought to the floor,' " Mr. Rove said.
For his own part, the Pennsylvania Republican yesterday said he would not require nominees to back his stance on Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision making abortion a constitutional right.
"Although I am pro-choice, I have supported many pro-life nominees," Mr. Specter said on CBS' "Face the Nation."
"That doesn't mean that I have a litmus test, or that I don't give appropriate deference to whom the president nominates."

The backpedaling ain't gonna save you, Specter. And having your buddies in the "mainstream" (sic) media carrying water for you only serves to cement your demise.

In other words, Arlen: we ain't buying it. Pack your things. We'll expect your resignation on the President's desk PDQ, mister.

Bush could very well snatch defeat from the jaws of victory if he allows this RINO to have the Judiciary committee.

Is there any reason to believe a word that Sen. Specter says on the matter?

If you really want to hear the judicial report on Specter read Ann Coulter's column:

Even if he did, could he rely on it? This is Specter we're talking about - he belongs in the Democrat party, not the GOP, and it's more than worth a Senate seat to get him to leave.

Yes, that explains Specter's warning to Bush that he wants no controversial nominees sent his way. Controversial means pro-life to Specter. Go the other way around. Bush or his advisors were aware of Specter's background. Why did they back nim over a true conservative. Question: Is Bush pro-life or does he take that stance for political popularity?

It's not even Bush's victory. It was the 3% right fringe who put him over the top. Today Rove is lying the the people "Senator Specter is a man of his word."

I'm getting a little worried about President Bush. Did you hear what Bush said the day after the elections? He said he was talking to all the liberals then he said he wants their support and I quote... "I will work to earn it"

A lot of real conservatives at FR warned us that Bush would go soft after the elections, but I never expected him to announce just hours after he won that he was going to betray us.

Rove is the clincher. I'm joining the Constitution Party and renewing my subsciption to the New American!

Don't let Specter disenfranchise 60 million voters. Either urge Frist to persuade Grassley to take the position, or jump over Specter to Kyl. Frist has the backing of those 60 million voters. Let hjim know it.
