~ MILITARY SHORT SPEAK ~ |
|
The military seems to have a language of its own, with many terms, acronyms, initialisms and abbreviations that aren't generally used in the "civilian world." What is an acronym? It is a word created from the first letter of a series of other words. It is spoken as one word. What is an initialism? It is a word created from the first letter of a series of other words, but each letter is spoken separately. What is an abbreviation? It is a shortened version of a word. What is Short Speak? It is any and all of the above. Want to know what they are talking about? Read on... |

FYI : Look in upper right corner of "My Comments" page.
Set it for "Brief" instead of Full.
You only will get title of thread and who pinged you.
No graphics will load.

U.S. troops are seen on the Iraqi side of the border behind barbed wire and a sprayed writing reading 'Welcome to Iraq' on the Abu Kamal border crossing with Syria on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004. Bulldozers are shoving sand into a 4-meter-high barrier along Syria's border with Iraq, where authorities say round-the-clock patrols and new observation towers are stopping the flow of foreign fighters into Iraq as American and Iraqi forces prepare for a major assault on Fallujah, Iraq.
Welcome to the new and improved Iraq. It ain't like it used to be here, it is better.
U.S. troops observe activity on the Syrian side of the border from their position on the Iraqi side at the Abu Kamal border crossing Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004.
Team America, is ready!
Coalition troops with captured men at the Fallujah main hospital on Monday.
The ancient Insurgent November fun game of bobbing for floor tiles is as popular as ever in Fallujah this year.
Image made from TV of US soldiers walking down a corridor when troops entered Fallujah hospital, in Iraq, Monday, Nov. 8, 2004.
Soap operas on Iraq TV are broadcast without scripts or commercial interruption!
An Iraqi firefighter arrives to the scene of a burning vehicle after it came under attack by unknown gunmen in the center of the capital Baghdad, Nov. 7, 2004.
The hot wax applications in Iraq car washes are popular, but for unknown reasons, there is an acute shortage of applicants for the job opportunities which the business provides.
A convoy of US marines armored vehicles makes its way out of Fallujah. Censorship authorities in the Gulf Arab state of Kuwait have forced the producer of a play on the restive Iraqi city to change its title citing "political sensitivities", the producer said.
A truly uninteresting image used by an AFP commentator to make a stupid editorial remark invites a response from a certain FReeper image commentator to say bad things. Restraint however, is the better part of valor! BLOW ME!
A US soldier with 1/5 Cavalry Regiment takes position on the outskirts of Fallujah, 50 kms west of Baghdad.
Aim small, miss small, Brother!

Thanks for the OV-10 Bronco photo, StarCMC!
One of the most versatile, under-rated aircraft of Vietnam. And beyond.
A favored means of delivery for Recon Marines. Where the Bronco would fly at tree-top level. Pull up vertical and dump the Recon Marines out while climbing. Tumbling to clear and parachute into Indian Country.
Thank God the ATF never got ahold of them during the Clinton reign. Where there were modifications to mount a turreted 20mm cannon under the fuselage.
Jack.
