Lawrence O'Donnell calls Red states"welfare" states; urges Blue states to secede
Posted on 11/07/2004 2:17:10 PM PST by bushisdamanin04
Sorry about the vanity, but this is a must read for conservatives.
On the McLaughlin Group this weekend, Lawrence ODonnell actually stated that the Red states were welfare and that the Blue states paid for the Red states. He further urged the Blue states to secede from the Red states. And he was quite serious. In the past few weeks ODonnell has had foaming-at-the-mouth mental breakdowns, especially on MSNBC, but when he made his comments on the McLaughlin Group, he was quite calm and collected.
First, are these the people to whom Bush is required to reach out to?
Second, as McLaughlin would say, Bye, bye!

If SF, LA, and NYC seceded, that would be enough to make us all happy.

Hmmmm, really? Seems to me those blue states are mostely head offices, collecting funds from those red states. Let them leave, I really do wish they would. It would certainly make our country much nicer. BTW, I assume all the red people in those blue states would relocate to red America.

Actually it is true BUT it is only half the story. Farm price supports go to the blue states and count on the Federal Funds Reports. The price supports help farmers but the bigger policy objective is to maintain cheap food prices for the blue states. They have created an artificial economy and the blue states have no choice but to participate.
Second, manufacturing, distribution, and financial centers will naturally be located in centralized locations (cities). Functions requiring specialized knowledge will naturally be clustered around the centers of higher education (cities again). Red states are important as MARKETS. Cut off the red areas as markets and the blue will collapse. It is just a function of a free market and has nothing to do with the productivity or values of the comparative regions.
There is a disturbing trend to a welfare mentality in the red areas but it is a shadow of what is in the blue areas. The brightest of the rural young people are being pushed to the cities for education and jobs. The remaining population is aging rapidly and is dependent on Social Security and other programs. The legacy industries are being replaced with quasi-governmental economies such as health care.
What he says is true to a point. The bigger point is that they can be replaced in a heartbeat, we can't.

They would lose big time. Leftists in this country are way behind the "private ownership of firearms" curve. Except for Diane Feinstein and Willie Raspberry (rest his soul).

I looked up the stats. The inner cities have 17.5% poverty. Even in the most rural areas, where pay is much lower, but so is cost of living, those falling under the national poverty level are only about 14.2%- and that makes it only about 7.5 million instead of the 14.5 million of the cities. See for yourselves.

Can you imagine what would have happened to Larry o"Donnell's career if he had been a conservative in total meltdown on a NUTWORK program?
This is most illustrative case of Nutwork bias I have ever seen in TV for the past 3 decades.

Actually, the liberals can leave, we'll keep the real estate.

this guy plainly has some screws loose, but nevertheless this type of seditious speech should be smashed and I would blame the interviewer as well for not doing so.

Hello,
You know, I had always believed (wrongly, as it turned out) that this election would put an end to the vile hate speech coming from the left. I wrongly assumed that the Old Media would pull it and not air it, as it harms them in the long run. So, I kept telling myself that after Election Day, we would have some time without it. It has gotten worse! In 1992 and again in 1996, I was very disappointed, and sad that this county had chosen Clinton, but I do not remember (EVER) the ongoing insanity that we experiencing now. It is a breathtaking in it's disconnect from reality.
Glad to be here, MOgirl

lose all of the talented, enlightened people
. Yes, they can import food from us, and we can import their movies. We'll see who wins that battle!
To: Libloather
LOL--they call us "welfare states"? Oh, this is too funny! My word, they're even more ignorant than I originally thought! How long would it take, I wonder, before they come to these "welfare states," crawling on their hands and knees asking for food? Woops, bet they forgot about that little detail!

I'm not going anywhere. There are 83 counties in Michigan, at least 75 of them are red.

There was a move by the San Fernando valley to secede form Los Angeles, and one thing that killed it was that the San Fernando valley would be forced to send a several hundred million dollars a year to LA for 10 years to make up for what LA was sucking out of them in taxes.
I really the idea of Cedar county on the eastside. I wish Reichart had made political hay of Ross being endorsed by the Seattle papers. Ads along the line of "the eastside needs a congressman who represents the eastside, not one who represents Seattle."
