RALEIGH, North Carolina (AP) -- An outbreak of E. coli infections linked to last month's state fair may be larger than previously thought, with more than 100 additional cases under review, according to health officials.
The number of confirmed infections grew to 31 by Saturday, and the state Department of Health and Human Services was investigating 103 more cases.
Department spokesman Bill Furney attributed the additional reports to heightened awareness among doctors and the public. "We're in a state where we are looking for it," he said.
The most common link among victims is that some visited a petting zoo at the fair. Many children were infected, including three who developed a serious complication that can cause kidney failure.

A job for Johnny Edwards!
Has Bush been blamed yet?
We had an E. Coli epidemic here in Texas last year from a state fair.
I guess petting zoos are off limits now.
We had an outbreak at the Washington Cty fair a few years ago but we weathered it.
It's apple cider season...they need to make certain no raw cider is being sold.
As those of you who frequent this forum are aware, about a year ago, Meg Scott-Phipps (D), the North Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture, was sentenced to about 4 years in the Federal Pen for election law violations in the 2000 election. Her opponent was Republican, Steve Troxler. Her appointed replacement was a career NC Dept of Ag guy named Britt Cobb (D, of course) who stood for election this year. His opponent is Steve Troxler.
As far as I know today, Steve Troxler is ahead by about 28,000 votes, but there is some question about a recount etc. This e-coli outbreak appears to have started with contaminated food at the NC State Fair, which was the responsibility of Mr. Cobb. It occurred at the showplace of the NC Dept. of Ag. In the spirit of true Democrat standards, it appears that Mr. Cobb's only duty is to tender his immediate resignation, concede the race to Mr. Troxler, and turn himself in to the closest U.S. Attorney for Federal Prosecution on account of his dereliction of duty and the reckless endangerment of our children.
And make sure folks wash their hands. Ick.

My wife & I took our daughter to that petting zoo.
I remember laughing at my wife because she was so insistent on all of us using the hand sanitizer.
I'm not laughing now -- once again, she was right.
NC ping, incoming.
you'd think you'd learn by now..... ; ).... we are ALWAYS right..... : )
You will never get me to admit that. ;)
Is it because they let the animals live in filth that the E-Coli was present?
i look very much forward to meeting Mrs. CD at the FR ball, so that we might enjoy being always right together : )
Soap, water and refrigeration are the cure.
Don't mess with the Missus... any transient sense of victory you may have will be regretted later with an interest rate like a car title loan.
Glad none of you got sick, especially the little one.
Very smart woman she is. Child #4 became quite ill with E. coli a few years ago. She and brothers were playing in a creek that was close to a pasture. It was pretty scary for 3 weeks, and took her a full 3 months to recover.
