Why Democrats are blue areas and why Republicans are Red areas on the map.

Posted on 11/06/2004 8:21:07 AM PST by april15Bendovr

If you look at the blue states and the red states then look at this Ferdanand Tonnies sociology study you can get a clear picture of just how America votes.

Gemeinschaft  are Republicans that are voting all over the country that believe in community and values.

Gesellschaft are Democrats that are voting in big cities that depend on big government.

The German sociologist Ferdinand Tonnies (1855-1936) was a major contributor to theory and field studies in sociology. [1] He is best remembered for his distinction between two basic types of social groups. [2] Tonnies argued that there are two basic forms of human will: the essential will, which is the underlying, organic, or instinctive driving force; and arbitrary will, which is deliberative, purposive, and future (goal) oriented. Groups that form around essential will, in which membership is self-fulfilling, Tonnies called Gemeinschaft (often translated as community). Groups in which membership was sustained by some instrumental goal or definite end he termed Gesellschaft (often translated as society). Gemeinschaft was exemplified by the family or neighborhood; Gesellschaft, by the city or the state. [3]   Main Work Gemeinschaft und Gesellschaft (1887; Community and Society, 1957) Main Concepts

Gemeinschaft  "community," the informal, simple, direct, face-to-face relations with each other.  Determined by Wesenwille (natural will), that is, spontaneous emotions and expressions of "with one another-ness."  Bonds are based on family, kinship, religion. [See also Online Dictionary of the Social Sciences]  and

Gesellschaft "society," rationally set up social organization, cosmopolitan urban social relations, bureaucracy. Bonds are more indirect and impersonal and based on efficiency, calculation, politics. [See also Online Dictionary of the Social Sciences]

Did you also notice how much of the blue area is on water? It is on the oceans and the Mississippi River, etc.

Sounds like a German all right.

This map really tells the story. More so than coloring the entire states. It brings out the broadness of President Bush's appeal and of the conservative tide that is and has been sweeping the country.

Most of those obscenely rich folks live in other states and own ungodly huge vacation homes there which they visit once a year for a week in December. Their not usually a full time residence, unless of course your talking about the first wife that got the home as a divorce settlement. These areas are permanently populated with trust fund ski bum's working as lifties and smoking boatloads of weed. The only thing they know about politics is what they read in the daily rant while farting around at the coffee shop. There are way too many white Rastafarian's. Most of them don't have cable or even watch TV, because their too busy drinking at the brew pub or mountain biking... I know this, because at one point, I was one of them.... I prefer Utah these days....

I guess I didnt want to generalize that all the Blue areas were cities but it would seem that the areas that are blue reside around NY City, LA and other large cities.

Places where Democrats get the bulk of their vote.
