In the biggest fight of his charmed life, John Kerry swung between bewilderment and anger when things didn't go his way on the campaign trial.
"I can't believe I'm losing to this idiot," the Massachusetts Democrat sighed to a staffer when President Bush's poll numbers surged in April.
"Why the f--- didn't he take it?" he wondered when Republican Sen. John McCain refused to be his running mate a half-dozen times.
"It's a pack of f---ing lies, what they're saying about me," he shouted at an adviser as a group of Swift boat veterans stepped up attacks on his Vietnam War record while his team refused to let him respond.
Those are some of the behind-the-scenes stories from the year-long race for the White House revealed in a special Newsweek report out today. The magazine says Kerry's courtship of McCain to be his vice presidential candidate was far more intense than the public realized.
It started in August 2003, but kicked into high gear after Kerry nailed the nomination. He even offered to expand the veep's role to control defense and foreign policy. "You're out of your mind," McCain told Kerry. "I don't even know if it's constitutional, and it certainly wouldn't sell."
Kerry seemed stunned that McCain rebuffed him "after what the Bush people did to him," referring to the 2000 GOP presidential primary.

Now he has to go home to MamaT. I can almost feel sorry for him--almost.
I am surprised that they can find a doctor willing to treat her. At least she won't be taking up a bed in Walter Reed.
Unfit for command . . .indeed.
No kidding. I'll take back about half of the mean things I've ever said about McCain, if he actually adamantly refused to do something advantageous because it would be unconstitutional.
Why did McCain hide this from the voting public when it is so vital to our national security!
Most of us, including myself, have railed on McCain often and loudly, but in retrospect, he DOES deserve some thanks for the support he gave the Republicans and Dubya.
Thank God he didn't get elected! Totally classless.
Damn nice...
I can say no more.
Consider it spanked.
That'll be $50, Charley. You want another appointment next week?
Confirmation of the obvious lay of sKerry's position on moral values. (Or should that be his immoral values?)
Thanks for suggesting we read the whole article. Isn't it interesting that all the inside stuff on Kerry is about his cursing, his attempt to subvert the Constitution with the offer to McCain, his indecisiveness, his arrogance, etc. while the inside scoop on the President is about teasing Rove and smart campaign strategy?
If true, we'll just have to repeat 2004 in 2008 and this time push the liberal socialist down even farther. They underestimate the strength of the vast right wing of the United States.
Bush was elected in 2000, but with a smaller majority. This time the majority was overwhelming. Over 3 million voters rejected liberalism, and they still have not learned. They have underestimated our president, and have paid dearly for the privilege. They underestimate the conservatives in this country and will pay a greater price in the future.
I suspect his campaign team did not respond to the Swifties right away because they were afraid it might all be true and did not want to give them any publicity. If they believed it to be false, they would have responded right away.
Now we know why it took him 45 minutes to get out of the Capitol Building on 9/11:
He was polling his friends to find out if he should leave, or head for the basement bunker.
birds of a feather and all that
(yes, I detest RINOs intently-even Constitutionally correct ones)
And on top of all this-n-that, I swear the man was totally drunk the last night of the GOP Convention when he and his side-kick stooge showed up at midnight...somewhere in Ohio, I believe. It was THAT night, at THAT moment, when I felt SURE there was no way he'd win this election. What he pulled that night was so tacky, so desperate. Most of the MSM hardly covered but a few minutes of the appearance. He showed what a real phony, joke-of-a-candidate he was that night.
No doubt, she's pleased as punch that he lost. What a drag on him as a candidate and on the dem party, this woman has been!
